MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota women's swimming and diving got competition started Wednesday night with a pair of relay races at the 2022 NCAA Championships at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Ga.
"We had a chance to get into the meet today with many of our swimmers," Minnesota head coach Kelly Kremer said. "While we didn't get points on the board, we are into the meet. We have some great opportunities on day two. I'm looking forward to a great prelim tomorrow for both swimming and diving."
The Golden Gophers finished 21st in the 800 free relay Wednesday with a time of 7:10.95, tied for the team's second best performance in the event this year.
Junior Jordan McGinty led off with a 1:47.56 split, while freshman Hannah Cornish followed in 1:48.48. Sophomore Megan Van Berkom was third for the squad and posted a 1:47.24 mark, while junior Maggie Summit swam the anchor in a time of 1:47.67.
The Gophers also competed in the first event of the night, the 200 medley relay, but were disqualified.
Minnesota returns to the pool Thursday for day two of the 2022 NCAA Championships. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. CT with Van Berkom competing in the 200 IM and freshman Hannah Cornish taking part in the 50 free.
Diving will take place on the one-meter as senior Sarah Bacon goes for a fourth career title, while teammate and fellow senior Joy Zhu also competes. The finals start at 5 p.m. with the aforementioned events plus the 200 free relay.
