Minnesota Places 21st at NCAA Championships

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team wrapped up competition at the 2022 NCAA Championships Saturday at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Ga.

The Golden Gophers ended in 21st place with 43 points. It's the best finish and highest score for Minnesota since 2019 when it came in 11th with 158.5 points.

"I'm very happy for Sarah (Bacon) and her performances this week and grateful that she came back for another year," Minnesota associate head coach Stacy Busack said. "Her commitment to excellence and contribution to the program are irreplaceable.

"We brought nineĀ student-athletes to the Championships, six more than last year, and for the vast majority this was their first experience at this meet. They learned fast, bounced back when things didn't go our way, and we have a solid foundation to build from with eight of our nine returning next year. They are hungry to continue improving, and I'm excited for what the future holds for this team."

The event culminated with the 400 free relay where Minnesota finished in 24th place. The Gophers' team of freshman Hannah Cornish, junior Maggie Summit, senior Olivia Bloomer and junior Jordan McGinty recorded the third-fastest time of the season at 3:16.46.

Minnesota also had three swimmers compete in Saturday's prelims.

Sophomore Megan Van Berkom finished as the top alternate in the 200 fly, touching in 17th place in a time of 1:54.84.

Freshman Hannah Cornish recorded her best finish of the NCAAs as she came in 21st in the 100 free. Her time of 48.30 was the second fastest of her career and .09 off her personal best.

In the 200 breast, junior Emma Lezer placed 46th with a time of 2:11.92 that was her second fastest of the season.
