The Gophers open the NCAA postseason against Massachusetts on Friday in Worcester, Mass.

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 2/3 Gopher men's hockey program will be the first team in college hockey history to play in 39 NCAA tournaments following Minnesota's selection to the 2022 field on Sunday evening.

The Big Ten regular-season champions will take on Massachusetts at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass., to open the national tournament on Friday, March 25 at 5:00 p.m. CT (TV: ESPNU; Radio: 1130 KTLK-AM/103.5 FM). Western Michigan and Northeastern open the regional at 11:00 a.m. CT (TV: ESPNU). The two advancing teams will compete for a trip to the Frozen Four on Sunday, March 27 at either 3:00 p.m. CT or 5:30 p.m. CT (TV: ESPN2).

"It never gets old – this is a great time of year. They call it "March Madness" for a reason," Minnesota Head Coach Bob Motzko said. "We're a good road team, and we need to get on the road right now. We've been at home for too long. We're going to be a fired-up group to get out of here."

Minnesota leads all college hockey programs with 56 all-time wins in the NCAA tournament (56-39) along with 21 Frozen Four berths and five national championships (1974, 1976, 1979, 2002, 2003). The Maroon & Gold have never played Massachusetts in NCAA tournament action and are 4-0-0 all-time against the Minutemen.

The Gophers enter the NCAA postseason with a 24-12-0 overall record and won the Big Ten regular-season title for the fifth time in the conference's nine-year history. The Gophers are led by Hobey Baker Award finalist and Big Ten Player of the Year Ben Meyers while Brock Faber was also recognized as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. Now in his fourth season with Minnesota, Bob Motzko earned his second Big Ten Coach of the Year honor in 2021-22 and sixth career conference coach of the year accolade.
