171st Meeting (101-69 all time)
At vs. Northwestern: 38-44
Minnesota vs. Big Ten: 793-882*
* - excludes vacated games
STARTING FIVE
• The University of Minnesota men's basketball team closes out the regular season with a road game at Northwestern Sunday, March 6. The Gophers are on a two-game road swing to end the Big Ten season. The last time Minnesota has closed out the Big Ten regular season with back-to-back road games dates back to the 2012-13 season when Minnesota played at Nebraska and at Purdue, March 6 and March 9, 2013.
• The Golden Gophers are 38-44 all time against the Wildcats in Evanston, Ill., and 101-69 overall. Minnesota's last win at Northwestern came on Feb. 23, 2020 in an 83-57 win. Daniel Oturu had 22 points and 12 rebounds. Payton Willis also contributed 14 points.
• Sunday marks the second contest between the Gophers and Northwestern Wildcats, the first coming in the second half of the Big Ten season on Feb. 19. Minnesota earned a 77-60 win at Williams Arena that day. Luke Loewe scored a season-best 24 points while Jamison Battle had 21 points and 14 rebounds. Eylijah Stephens added 15 points and Sean Sutherlin had 11. The Gophers were without starting point guard Payton Willis that game, due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols.
• Minnesota and Northwestern have the potential of playing in back-to-back games against each other. Minnesota is currently the 13-seed heading into the Big Ten Tournament, while Northwestern currently holds the 12-seed. If that stays the course, the Gophers and Wildcats would play at 6 p.m., Wednesday. If Minnesota plays Northwestern in both scenarios, it would be the first time since 2014 to finish the regular season and start the Big Ten tourney against the same team. In 2014, the Gophers played Penn State, winning both the regular season finale and the Big Ten Tournament opener.
• Although Minnesota fell to Maryland 84-73 Wednesday, the night was a historic one for Jamison Battle, who set career-highs in points (39), FG made (14) and 3FG made (7). In all, the Robbinsdale, Minn., product made 14-for-31 field goals, including 7-16 from three-point range. His performance tied Maryland's Diamond Stone for the XFINITY Center's individual scoring record, as well as Maryland's Nik Caner-Medley for the facility's FGM record. The 39 points also tied for sixth on the single-game all-time records list for the Gophers. The performance was the highest scoring for any Gopher since Marcus Carr tallied 41 at Nebraska on Feb. 27, 2021.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
• Northwestern enters the Minnesota game with a 13-15 overall record and 6-13 in Big Ten action. The Wildcats will play their first game since Feb. 28 after back-to-back road losses at Penn State and Iowa.
• Pete Nance and Boo Buie lead the offensive charge for the Wildcats, averaging 14.6 and 14.2 points per game, respectively. Chase Audige also averages double digits at 10.6 ppg.
• As a team, Northwestern averages 72.86 points per game, while it has allowed just 68.8. The Wildcats average 35.7 rebounds per game and are shooting 42.8 percent from the field. Northwestern ranks second in the league in forced turnovers, assist turnover ratio and turnover margin.
20-PLUS GAMES
• Minnesota's Jamison Battle has had 10 games in which he's scored over 20 points in a game, a team high. He also produced a 39-point performance, which tied for sixth in school history.
• Payton Wills has five games with over 20 points, including a 32-point performance against Rutgers (1/22) earlier this year. That marks a program high this season.
• Eric Curry, Luke Loewe and Eylijah Stephens have each recorded one 20-point contest this year. Curry established it against Penn State (2/12), while Stephens had 22 points against Iowa (1/16). Luke Loewe joined the club with a 24-point performance against Northwestern (2/19).
UP NEXT
• Minnesota will compete in the 2022 Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament, held March 9-13, 2022, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. It marks the 13th time the city of Indianapolis has hosted the event. All 14 Big Ten programs will compete in this year's tournament, with the winner receiving the Big Ten's automatic qualification to the NCAA Tournament. Big Ten Network will televise the first 10 games of the tournament (first round through quarterfinals), with CBS Sports broadcasting the semifinals and championship game on CBS for the 25th consecutive year. All BTN games can be streamed via the web, smartphones, tablets and connected devices through the FOX Sports App, while the CBS Sports broadcasts will be available to stream on Paramount+.
