Gopher Divers Head to Zone Championships

3/4/2022 11:13:00 AM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving

MINNEAPOLIS - Seven Gophers are heading to Madison, Wis., to begin competition at the 2022 NCAA Zone D Diving Championships Monday.

The Zone Championships will be held at the Soderholm Family Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin, March 7-9. Admission is free for fans wanting to attend (masks are required), while BigTenPlus.com will have a free stream available each day.

Competition starts Monday with the women on the 1-meter and the men on the 3-meter, while Tuesday will see the women on the 3-meter and men on the 1-meter. Both days start at 11 a.m. with the women's prelims followed by the men's. The finals take place 15 minutes after the men's prelims conclude.

Both the men and women will take to the platform for the final day of action on Wednesday. The women are set to start at 11 a.m., while the men will begin at 3:15.

Over the three days of the event, six Minnesota student-athletes will attempt to secure their bids to the 2022 NCAA Championships on the 3-meter springboard, while five will have a chance on the 1-meter and four will compete on the platform.

A full list of the competing Minnesota divers is below, along with their respective events and season-best scores.

NCAA Diving Zones Qualifiers - Season-Best Scores
Sarah Bacon, R-Sr. - 1-meter (376.10), 3-meter (436.70)
Jake Butler, Jr. - 1-meter (374.80), 3-meter (421.15), Platform (300.50)
Susanna Fish, So. – 3-meter (297.85), Platform (276.95)
Kate LaMonica, Fr. – Platform (269.70)
Av Osero, So. – 1-meter (281.48), 3-meter (305.63), Platform (235.35)
Megan Phillip, So., 1-meter (274.65), 3-meter (300.70)
Joy Zhu, Sr. - 1-meter (372.40), 3-meter (369.75), Platform (266.85)

For Bacon, the defending NCAA champion on the 3-meter and three-time champion on the 1-meter, it's a return to the diving well where last month she swept the 1-meter the 3-meter at the Big Ten Championships, setting meet and school records in the process.

In addition, Zhu was the runner-up on the 3-meter and took third on the 1-meter.

On the men's side, Butler was seventh on the 3-meter at Big Tens and finished 12th on the 1-meter.

At the Zone championships, scores will be carried over into the next segment from the prelims, with 18 divers advancing into each respective finals session. The 12-dive total will determine the final standings.

The top five female and top four male divers from each event at the five respective zone diving championships will be eligible to compete at the NCAA championships. Additional place finishers in each event at each zone will be eligible based on the number of student-athletes from that zone who finished in the top 16 in that event at the previous year's contested or completed NCAA championships.

For Zone D in 2022, 10 women will qualify on the 1-meter, 11 on the 3-meter and nine on the platform. The men will have 10 on the 1-meter and eight each on the 3-meter and platform.
