3/7/2022 3:46:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving

MINNEAPOLIS – Three Minnesota divers qualified for the NCAA Championships after the opening day of the Zone D Diving Championships Monday in Madison, Wis.

Seniors Sarah Bacon and Joy Zhu both punched their tickets on the 1-meter, while junior Jake Butler did the same for the men on the 3-meter.

The three-time defending NCAA champion in the event, Bacon earned a chance to complete the four-peat as she took first place Monday. Bacon posted a score of 340.70 in the prelims to outpace the field by nearly 23 points. She then tallied a score of 347.55 in the finals for a 12-dive total of 688.25, putting her over 61 points ahead of the field.

Joining Bacon will be Joy Zhu who finished seventh with a score of 600.50. Eighth through prelims following a six-dive total of 293.65, Zhu moved up one spot in the final standings thanks to a performance of 306.85. Zhu will be making her first appearance at NCAAs next week, March 16-19 in Atlanta, Ga. She won the 1-meter at the 2020 Zone Championships before the NCAAs were cancelled due to COVID-19, and she then opted out of last season due to COVID concerns.

Butler earned his spot with a fifth-place finish, totaling 760.60 points. Sitting fifth through prelims following a 390.55, Butler needed to finish in the top eight to advance. He left no doubt on his final dive, tallying an 81.60 to post a score of 370.05 and secure his spot. Butler also qualified for last year's NCAA Championships on the 3-meter, placing 26th.

Also in action Monday were sophomores Av Osero and Megan Phillip. Osero finished 31st in the prelims with a score of 236.65, while Phillip was 36th with a 226.50.

The top 18 in each prelim advanced to the finals. The top five female and top four male divers from each event automatically earned a spot at the NCAA championships. Additional place finishers in each event at each zone are eligible based on the number of student-athletes from that zone who finished in the top 16 in that event at last year's NCAA championships. For Zone D, that means 10 women qualified on the 1-meter, while the men had eight qualify on the 3-meter.

Action continues Tuesday morning with prelims at 11 a.m. and the finals starting 15 minutes after prelims conclude. Bacon, Osero, Phillip and Zhu will all compete on the 3-meter along with sophomore Susanna Fish, while Butler will turn to the 1-meter.
