Gophers have eight still alive as Steveson eyes third conference title

LINCOLN, Neb. - The University of Minnesota wrestling program has wrapped day one of the Big Ten Championships in Pinnacle Bank Arena where eight wrestlers remain alive in the tournament, including six Gophers who have already punched their ticket to the NCAA Championships in Detroit.

As a team, Minnesota currently sits in eighth place with 55.5 tournament points

Heavyweight Gable Steveson headlines the remaining grapplers in the Maroon & Gold, as he is the lone Gopher to advance to the finals after today's competition. Steveson opened up his tournament with a dominant 20-5 technical fall over Ohio State's Tate Orndorff. Gable then continued his dominance with a 14-6 win over Michigan's Mason Parris

Jake Bergeland was Minnesota's other semifinalist, as he earned his berth by defeating both Matt Santos (Michigan State) and Cayden Rooks (Indiana) by decisions before ultimately falling to the top-ranked Nick Lee (Penn State) by technical fall to fall to the consolation semifinals.

Both Patrick McKee and Michael Blockhus recovered from first round losses to battle back into tomorrow's consolation semifinals. McKee defeated Drew Hildebrandt (Penn State) and Drake Ayala (Iowa) on the backside en route to the consolation semifinals, while Blockhus took down Graham Rooks (Indiana) and Kanen Storr (Michigan) to secure his own top-6 finish.

Jake Gliva, Cael Carlson, and Isaiah Salazar will wrestle in the seventh-place match tomorrow afternoon, with both Salazar and Gliva earning upset wins on day one. Isaiah Salazar knocked off ninth-ranked John Poznanski of Rutgers in the opening round, then defeated No. 16 Donnell Washington of Indiana on the backside. Gliva punched his ticket to Detroit by defeating No. 11 Brock Hudkins of Indiana in the second round of consolations.

Michial Foy currently sits in the ninth place bracket semifinals after a 2-2 day, and looks to win one of his next two in order to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

Sebas Swiggum was eliminated from the tournament after an 0-2 day, while Bailee O'Reilly injury defaulted out of the tournament after sustaining an injury in the quarterfinals.

Action resumes tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. CT, as the wrestlebacks will continue up to the placement matches before the final session gets underway at 3:30 p.m. CT. All action will be broadcasted on Big Ten Network or BTN+
