Chase Stanke hit his conference-leading seventh home run of the year
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers were outlasted, 3-1, by No. 12 Notre Dame to conclude the 2022 Cambria College Classic on Sunday night at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Notre Dame's Austin Temple worked 7.0 innings, striking out nine Gophers hitters and carrying a no-hitter through 6.1 innings. He allowed just two runners to reach base - on a walk and a hit by pitch, before Chase Stanke broke through and hit his seventh home run of the year to put the Gophers on the board in the seventh inning.
Minnesota's Aidan Maldonado came into the game in the second inning after George Klassen pitched the first. Maldonado went a career-long 6.0 innings, striking out five UND batters and allowing just five hits. He was charged with two earned runs, which came in the sixth and seventh innings.
The Irish scored their first run of the game on a two out RBI double to right center field that scored a runner from first base. They manufactured another run in the sixth inning, getting a two out double from Jacob Branigan followed by an RBI single from Danny Neri to go up 2-0.
UND used small ball to generate their third and last run of the game in the seventh inning. Their leadoff hitter Brooks Coetzee doubled to begin the inning. A sacrifice bunt advanced him to third base before a perfectly executed squeeze play scored him on the next play.
Stanke blasted an opposite field home run with one out in the seventh inning to give the Gophers their only run of the game. His seven home runs lead the Big Ten and rank him in the top five nationally.
Minnesota was unable to get anything else going on offense, going down 1-2-3 in the eighth inning and getting just one baserunner on in the ninth with a walk.
Left-hander Jack Liffrig came on in the eighth and ninth innings for Minnesota, tossing 1.2 innings and allowing just one hit with no runs.
