Gophers Defeated 5-2 by NDSU

3/8/2022 9:10:00 PM | Baseball

Merila, Stanke and Sweeny had two hits each

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers fell in a 5-2 defeat to the North Dakota State Bison on Tuesday night at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Chase Stanke paced the Gophers offense with a 2-for-4 day at the plate with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Boston Merila and Ronald Sweeny also went 2-for-4, each hitting a double and a single.

The Bison struck first when NDSU's Jack Simonsen hit a three-run double down the left field line with two outs in the top of the first inning to give the visitors an early 3-0 lead. Simonsen went on to hit a solo home run to left center with two outs in the third inning, giving the Bison a 4-0 lead.

Minnesota finally broke through for its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs and no one on, Sweeny singled to center and would later advance to second on a wild pitch. Andrew Wilhite drove him in with a base hit to right field to cut the lead to 4-1.

The Gophers would get another back in the bottom of the fifth when Merila and Stanke hit back-to-back doubles to make the score 4-2. After a walk from Jack Kelly, Easton Bertrand flew out to the warning track in left center, narrowly missing what would've been his fifth home run of the season.

NDSU's Simonsen blasted his third hit of the game, a solo shot to center, to put his team back up 5-2. Through six innings, he was 3-for-3 at the plate with two home runs, a double and all five Bison RBI.

Minnesota threatened in the eighth inning after a leadoff double by Stanke and a walk from Kelly. Three straight strikeouts from NDSU's Drew ended the threat as the Gophers were held scoreless for the final four innings.

Six Gophers pitchers made appearances, combining to strike out 12 with five earned runs and eight hits allowed. Josh Culliver struck out a team-best four hitters in 2.1 innings, allowing two hits and an earned run.
