STILLWATER, Okla. - The Minnesota softball team dropped a 10-3 game to Stanford, a team receiving votes, Sunday in Stillwater, Okla., as part of the OSU-TU Invitational and held a 2-1 lead on No. 8 Oklahoma State before play was suspended for weather in the fifth inning.
Game One
After scoring twice in the first inning, Minnesota failed to hold off Stanford in the opening contest falling 10-3 in a six-inning affair, despite a 3-for-3 performance by Natalie DenHartog.
Â
The Gophers jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the Cardinal as Lauren Espalin and DenHartog connected for back-to-back singles opening the game. DenHartog moved to scoring position by stealing second and both runners scored as Chloe Evans ripped a single back up the middle. Stanford got on the board in the bottom half of the first hitting a RBI ground out and used a two-out rally in the second plating three runs for a 4-2 edge.
Â
DenHartog legged out an infield single starting the third frame and Evans reached getting hit on the helmet with a pitch as Minnesota looked to even the score, but an inning-ending double play erased the threat. The Cardinal stretched their margin scoring three times in the third capped on a two-run home run taking a 7-2 lead.
Â
A bases-clearing double the next inning pushed Stanford to a 10-2 advantage. The Gophers extended the game as DenHartog cleared the left center fence blasting a solo home run, her fifth of the weekend. Three-straight hits led to the winning run in the sixth as the Cardinal closed out the game in six innings, 10-3.
Â
Game Two
The Gophers held a 2-1 lead over nationally-ranked Oklahoma State in the top of the fifth inning when play was suspended after three rain/lightning delays. The game will resume from where it left off with the bases loaded and no outs in the top half of the frame when Minnesota returns to Cowgirl Stadium Wednesday evening.
Â
Up Next
The biggest test of the season awaits Minnesota Monday evening as it heads to No. 1 Oklahoma for a battle with the Sooners at 4 p.m. live on Bally Sports Oklahoma. The game time was moved up due to low temperatures.
