Gable Steveson Claims Third B1G Crown as Gophers Send Eight to NCAAs

Steveson becomes the seventh Gopher in history to win at least three B1G titles

LINCOLN, Neb. - Senior heavyweight Gable Steveson reached yet another milestone in his Gopher career, as he became just the seventh wrestler in program history to win at least three Big Ten titles on Sunday afternoon, as Iowa's Tony Cassioppi medically forfeited out of the championship bout to give Steveson his third title.

Steveson was one of eight Gophers to automatically qualify for the NCAA tournament as the Gophers had an impressive second day on the consolation side, with a total of seven Gopher wrestlers outperforming their seed.

Minnesota placed 6th as a team with 77.5 points, while Steveson was named B1G Wrestler of the Year, which is given the conference's best wrestler each season as voted by the coaches.

At 125 pounds, Patrick McKee received a medical forfeit win over Purdue's Devin Schroder in the consolation semifinals, then he defeated Michael DeAugustino of Northwestern via 3-2 decision in the third place match to avenge an earlier season loss. With the third-place finish, McKee has ten straight consolation wins in the postseason dating back to the 2021 NCAA Championships.

Jake Bergeland was Minnesota's other third place finisher as his second day featured a pair of rematches against previous opponents. He defeated Dylan D'Emilio (Ohio State) by 4-3 decision in the consolation semifinals, before beating Michigan's Stevan Micic for the second time this season, this time by a score of 4-0.

Michael Blockhus placed fifth at 149 pounds, falling to Ridge Lovett (Nebraska) in his first match of the day, before claiming a medical forfeit win over Mike Van Brill (Rutgers) in the fifth place match.

Cael Carlson needed a win in the 7th place match to punch his ticket to Detroit, and he did just that by pinning Michigan State's Caleb Fish in the first period.

Isaiah Salazar and Jake Gliva both fell in their 7th place bouts but had already qualified their spots for nationals after yesterday's action, while Michial Foy claimed the final allocation spot at 197 pounds by winning his 11th place bout over Maryland's Jaron Smith.

Up next for the Gophers is the NCAA Championships in Detroit, Michigan from Mar. 17-19, which will be headlined by Gable Steveson's pursuit of becoming Minnesota's sixth two-time national champion, as well as the first season with a 100% bonus rate in collegiate wrestling history.
