Gophers Win Border Battle in Iowa City

Minnesota defeats the Hawkeyes, 6-1
The University of Minnesota women's tennis team squared off against neighboring Iowa this afternoon, as Minnesota rebounded with a convincing 6-1 victory. With their win, they improved to 12-3 on the season.
The Gophers won in Iowa City for the first time since 2018, and snapped the Hawkeyes streak of two consecutive head-to-head wins. They expanded on their all-time series lead, as this marked Minnesota's 43rd victory against Iowa, their most against any program.
Minnesota won both doubles matches, and five of six singles competitions.
In doubles play, Minnesota prevailed at No. 1 and No. 3, securing the point for the Gophers. The top pairing of Rachel Hanford and Emilee Duong defeated Vipasha Mehra and Marisa Schmidt, 6-2. At No. 3, freshmen duo Lucy Lu and Maria Rizzolo beat Samantha Mannix and Samantha Gillas to confirm the Minnesota point. The No. 2 match went unfinished.
In singles, Minnesota posted wins at the No. 1, No. 2, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 positions. Rachel Hanford won a tightly contested first set, before closing out her straight set victory over Marisa Schmidt. At No. 2, Emilee Duong bested Michelle Bacalla with consecutive 6-4 sets. Vasia Karvouni secured the win for Minnesota, as her dominant third set finished 6-0.
At No. 5, Anfisa Danilchenko rebounded from a difficult first set to defeat Vipasha Mehra. The No. 3 match went in favor of Iowa, their lone victory of the afternoon. The match concluded with Dalila Said's three set victory at No. 6, as Minnesota won the match 6-1.

Minnesota has the upcoming week off, and will resume play the following weekend. Their road trip continues as they travel to Illinois to take on the Illini and Northwestern Wildcats. The Gophers play in Champaign on Friday Mar. 18, before heading to Evanston for their Sunday match.
