A native of Grand Rapids, Minn., McLaughlin completed his senior season with the Gophers in 2021-22 and recorded 105 points (38 goals, 67 assists) in 142 career games as the 86th member of Minnesota's 100-Point Club. The forward closed out his college career with his best statistical season, finishing tied for second on the team with 33 points (13 goals, 20 assists) while playing in all 39 games. All four figures were career-highs for McLaughlin.

After helping Minnesota win the 2021 Big Ten tournament and return to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2017 as a junior, McLaughlin remained a key component in the Minnesota line up this year as the Maroon & Gold won their fifth Big Ten regular-season title in the league's nine-year history and advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four for the first time since 2014. McLaughlin was recognized as an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection this season.

Prior to joining the Gophers, McLaughlin skated with the Chicago Steel in the USHL and led Grand Rapids High School to the 2017 MSHSL Class AA State Championship.
