Gophers Downed at Nebraska Friday

4/15/2022 8:00:00 PM | Softball

LINCOLN, Neb. - The Golden Gophers softball team suffered a 7-0 loss at (RV) Nebraska Friday evening to open the Big Ten Conference series at Bowlin Stadium.

After Minnesota (19-16-1 overall, 5-5 B1G) went down in order to open the game, Nebraska struck for a 2-0 lead getting a one-out double followed by a two-run homer in the bottom of the first. The Gophers got a walk with one out by Chloe Evans in the second before the home side turned an inning-ending double play stopping the frame. A double from Makenna Dowell and a walk to Kayla Chavez put two runners on base during the third, only to see the Huskers escape the threat again maintaining the two-run edge.

Nebraska tacked on three runs in the third, all coming with two outs, taking advantage of a close call on a foul ball that plated two as its lead grew to 5-0. Minnesota got base runners on in both the third and fourth, but were unable to break through and the Huskers tacked on a solo home run in the fifth pushing the margin to 6-0.

Sydney Strelow drew a one-out walk in the sixth, her seventh-straight game earning a free base, and Evans added a single to center as the Gophers attempted to battle back. The rally was cut short as Minnesota failed to capitalize on its chances with runners in scoring position leaving eight total base runners for the contest. Nebraska added a run in the bottom of the sixth and had the bases loaded before Ansleigh Hollifield worked out of the jam getting a ground ball to strand three.

Chavez beat out an infield single and Nani Valencia added a walk during a two-out rally in the seventh before the home team closed out the game, 7-0. Chavez finished 1-for-1 at the plate and drew two of the Gophers' five walks, while Dowell and Evans had the team's other two hits. The Huskers extended their winning streak to 16 games and remain unbeaten in league play at 11-0.
