Maroon and Gold to Cap Off Season at Big Ten Championship on Friday
4/20/2022 3:28:00 PM | Women's Golf
Pittsburgh, Pa. – For their final event of the season, the University of Minnesota women's golf team will square off against its conference rivals in the Big Ten Championship. The three-day event will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The 54-hole tournament will give one team a chance to claim a Big Ten Championship title. Teams will play one round on each day of the weekend, starting on Friday and concluding on Sunday. Minnesota's lone win came in 1989, with Kate Hughes earning individual medalist honors. That was the last time a Gopher claimed that honor.
Fox Chapel Golf Club is hosting the event after TPC River's Bend hosted the event from 2017-2021. Michigan State will be defending its 2021 win, which was the last time the tournament was played, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ohio State won the tournament in 2019.
The Gophers will send out a lineup of senior Joanne Free, junior Grace Curran, junior Emma Carpenter, senior Geraldine Wong, junior Leah Herzog and freshman Alexis McMurray.
Free, Curran and Carpenter competed in the Big Ten Championship last year, where the Gophers finished 11th.
The 18-hole Seth Raynor golf course at Fox Chapel Golf Club was restored in 2020, which includes 97 new bunker shapes as seen on the original 1923 course. The course, which is in the 100 Most Prestigious Golf Clubs in the world by Links Magazine, offers a challenging layout at 6,696 yards and a par 71. Its distinctive elevated, multi-tiered greens require golfers of all levels to play unique and imaginative shots.
Coverage of the 40th Big Ten Conference Championship will be provided by Big Ten Network and the FOX Sports app. Fans can also follow the tournament via live scoring at Golfstat.com or at the link above.
