Minnesota defeats Purdue, earns 17th win of the season
On Sunday, the University of Minnesota women's tennis team matched up with an Indiana opponent for the second time in as many days. They squared off with Purdue, who were coming off a close defeat to Wisconsin. Minnesota looked to build on the success of their 4-0 win against Indiana. The Golden Gophers tallied another win this afternoon, as they downed the Boilermakers, 4-1.
With their win, Minnesota matched their best win total since 2015. They earned 17 regular season wins, marking the best figure of Coach Catrina Thompson's tenure. They finish the regular season at 17-9, 5-6 in the Big Ten. They ensure standing above Purdue, as Sunday's hosts drop to 3-8 in conference play.
Minnesota secured the opening point for the second consecutive day, through wins at No. 2 and No. 3. The Golden Gophers conclude the regular season having taken 19 of 26 doubles points.
At doubles No. 2, Dalila Said and Rachel Hanford cruised to a 6-1 win over Tara Katarina Milic and Rut Galindo. At No. 3, Maria Rizzolo and Lucy Lu clinched the point for the second time this weekend, using a strong run of games to win 6-3. The No. 1 match featuring Emilee Duong and Ekin Ercetin went unfinished on account of previous results.
Minnesota posted singles victories at No. 1, No. 3, and No. 6.
In singles, Ekin Ercetin extended the lead to two, with a 6-4, 6-1 win at the third position. After Purdue halved the deficit at No. 2, Dalila Said restored the two point lead, as she earned a straight set victory over Seira Shimizu. Leading 3-1, Rachel Hanford sealed the win for Minnesota, as she defeated No. 71 Csilla Fodor in the third set. This marks Hanford's third ranked win of the year.
The No. 4, and No. 5 matches went unfinished, on account of the previous results.
