Minnesota scored six runs in the bottom of the third

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers took down the St. Thomas Tommies 9-0 on Wednesday night at Siebert Field.

The Gophers (12-27, 2-10 Big Ten) started fast offensively, scoring all nine runs on 10 hits in the first three innings to break the game open.

Minnesota got a standout pitching performance from redshirt junior Richie Holetz (1-2), who went 4.0 innings, striking out a career-high six batters. Freshman left-hander Tucker Novotny came in after Holetz and pitched 3.0 innings, striking out three. Fellow lefties Noah Rooney and Noah DeLuga finished the final 2.0 innings, striking out four of the final six hitters.

The 'U' chased out St. Thomas (10-23, 4-8 Summit) starter Kevin Millar (1-1) after just 1.0 inning. Right-hander Jeremy Klock lasted 1.2, allowing seven runs (three earned) with eight hits allowed.

Minnesota leadoff hitter Brett Bateman remained red-hot, adding to his 13-game hitting streak with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Boston Merila also went 3-for-4 and Jack Kelly went 2-for-4. Each had a run scored and an RBI.

The 'U' tallied a pair of runs in the first inning to start the scoring. The home team loaded the bases with one out before Kyle Bork walked to score a run. Boston Merila then singled to center, plating run No. 2.

A Chase Stanke RBI single in the second put Minnesota up 3-0 before it broke the game wide open in the bottom of the third. Bork was hit by a pitch and Merila singled to start the inning. Riley Swenson then laid down a bunt that was fumbled by the pitcher, allowing all runners to reach safely, loading the bases. Bork would score on a wild pitch before a balk by UST's Jeremy Klick brought home Merila. An RBI single by Ronald Sweeny brought home Swenson to put the 'U' up 6-0.

The Gophers kept the fun going, getting another single from Bateman followed by an RBI single from Jack Kelly and a two-run double by Brady Counsell. Minnesota cruised into the fourth inning leading 9-0, with 10 hits. The Gophers would total just one more hit the rest of the night, but the damage had already been done.

UST tallied just three hits on the evening. Minnesota pitchers struck out 13 Tommies and didn't surrender any walks for the first time this season.

Wednesday's result was Minnesota's second shutout of the season and first since a 12-0 victory over the Tommies on March 1 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

UP NEXT
Minnesota travels to Michigan State (18-21, 3-9 Big Ten) for three games this weekend in East Lansing, Mich.
