The Elite 90 Award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the Frozen Four.

BOSTON – Gopher Hockey's Colin Schmidt was recognized as the 2021-22 recipient of the NCAA's Elite 90 Award this week as the Minnesota men's hockey program competed at the 2022 NCAA Frozen Four in Boston.

The Elite 90 Award recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 90 Award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's 90 championships.

A native of Wayzata, Minn., Schmidt has skated in 10 games this season for the Gophers including his Maroon & Gold debut in November. The forward was a vital piece of the lineup in February, slotting in while Minnesota was shorthanded due to the Olympics and recording his first point with the Gophers in a 3-1 win at Penn State on Feb. 18 (a primary assist on what became the eventual game-winning goal). After starting his career at Union, Schmidt joined Minnesota's roster a year ago – he has totaled six points (one goal, five assists) in 42 career NCAA games.

A finance major in the Carlson School of Management, Schmidt earned Academic All-Big Ten honors this year (his first year of eligibility) with an unblemished 4.00 cumulative grade point average.
