Gophers in Fifth Place After Two Rounds at Indiana Invitational

4/9/2022 7:35:00 PM | Women's Golf

Bloomington, Ind. – Juniors Emma Carpenter (74-76—150) and Grace Curran (74-78—152) led the way for Minnesota through the first 36 holes of the Indiana Invitational as the University of Minnesota women's golf team played two rounds at the Pfau Golf Course in Bloomington, Ind.

As a team, the Maroon and Gold finished in fifth place after two rounds. The team improved as the day went on, finishing a snow-delayed round one with a score of 308 (+20) and round two at 301 (+17). Their combined score puts them back 24 strokes of the co-leading Wisconsin and Michigan, and just eight strokes behind third-place Purdue.

Quotable
"After a delay due to snow we did get to complete 36 holes today. We really hurt in the AM round with no depth in our scoring but managed to bounce back in the afternoon," head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. "We know we left shots out on the course and need to clean up our mental errors tomorrow. The course and conditions are challenging enough without us compounding mental mistakes as well. Geri's under par 71 was the highlight of the afternoon, and a massive turnaround for her."

Notable
Carpenter is in a tie for 14th place through two rounds after birdying three holes in the second round.

With three birdies in the first and one in the second, Curran is in 20th place after 36 holes played.

Senior Geraldine Wong wasn't far behind, finishing the first two rounds with a score of 82-71—153. Her improvement in the second round put her in a tie for 21st place.

Similar to Wong, senior Joanne Free improved in the second round, scoring a 76. Her combined score from the first two rounds was 81-76—157, which placed her in a tie for 31st.

Junior Leah Herzog finished day one with a score of 79-79—158, which puts her in a tie for 35th place after 36 holes.

In her second career event as a Gopher, freshman Alexis McMurray finished the day at 82-78—160. She is in a tie for 42nd place heading into day two.
