FRENCH LICK, IN -- The University of Minnesota men's golf team wrapped up play Sunday at the Big Ten Championship shooting a 306(+18) in the final round, which brings the tournament total to 907 (298-303-306 -- 907) (+43). The Gophers earned 10th place at the Big Ten Championship as the 2021-2022 season comes to a close.
It was a day where the course played tough – the lowest team score was +14 in the final round. The Gophers were led today by senior Lincoln Johnson (76-78-72 -- 226). Johnson, who was competing in his third Big Ten Championship, submitted the third best individual score in a difficult third round, shooting a 72(E). Johnson was -1 through nine holes, and highlighted the round for the Gophers with an eagle on hole three. Finishing in a tie for 27th overall, Johnson will return to the Gophers next year as he uses his extra year of eligibility.
Freshman Bennett Swavely (74-76-78 -- 228) did well in his first look at Big Ten Championship action. Swavely's best round came in round one where he was +2 at the turn and even on the back-nine, good for a 74(+2) in the round. Swavely finishes in a tie for 36th.
Junior transfer Antoine Sale (76-75-82 -- 223) was also getting his first look at Big Ten postseason action. Sale was +1 through the front-nine in round three, but was one of many who struggled in today's difficult conditions – he finishes tied for 52nd.
Junior Connor Glynn replaced freshman Eduardo Galdos in the final round, and shot a 77 in his first look at the Pete Dye Course.
Quotable:
"Our guys battled so well today." said head coach Justin Smith, "The first 12 holes were some of the best golf we've played all year. I always love seeing this group battle right till the end. We definitely have a lot to build on and be excited for heading into the summer months."
