MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota baseball team fell 12-5 to the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Friday night at Siebert Field.
Gophers (12-31, 2-14 Big Ten) right-hander Sam Ireland (4-5) went 3.2 innings, striking out five but giving up nine hits and six earned runs. Nebraska's (19-25, 7-9 Big Ten) Koty Frank (4-0) took home the win, pitching 4.1 innings in relief, striking out four, allowing no runs and only a pair of hits.
Designated hitter Riley Swenson paced Minnesota offensively, going 3-for-5 with a home run and two singles. Brett Bateman and Boston Merila (2-for-5) also had two singles. Nebraska right fielder Garrett Anglim paced the Huskers with a 4-for-5 night at the dish. NU outhit Minnesota 14-10.
Nebraska started the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Three singles, a walk and a hit-by-pitch allowed the two runs to cross the plate.
Minnesota would answer back with three runs in the bottom of the second. Singles by Chase Stanke and Swenson and a walk from Brady Counsell loaded the bases with no outs. Ronald Sweeny was hit by a pitch, scoring Stanke. Consecutive sacrifice flies to deep right center field from Noah Berghammer and Andrew Wilhite scored Swenson and Counsell to give the Gophers a 3-2 lead.
The 'U' would tag on another in the bottom of the third. After singles from Merila and Swenson, Counsell grounded one to third base, but an errant throw sailed into right field as the third baseman tried to make the throw to second base, plating Merila.
NU would respond, re-taking the lead with a four-run top of the fourth. A two-out, RBI single from Garrett Anglim cut the lead to 4-3. After another single from Griffin Everitt, a three-run home run to left by Max Anderson put the Huskers up 6-4. Ireland would leave one batter later, ending his day at 3.2 innings pitched.
The Huskers added two more in the top of the fifth to go up 8-4. Back-to-back singles followed by a sacrifice bunt put the runners on second and third with one out. Both runners scored after a wild pitch followed by a passed ball.
Riley Swenson belted his second home run of the season, a solo shot to left field, to cut NU's lead to 8-5 in the bottom of the fifth. The Huskers tallied another in the top of the sixth to regain a four-run lead at 9-5.
Minnesota's bats went quiet in the middle innings, going down 1-2-3 in the sixth and seventh innings.
In the bottom of the eighth, Noah Berghammer hit a one-out double. He would advance to third on a two-out infield single from Brett Bateman, but both would be left stranded after Merila lined out to left to end the frame.
NU added three more in the top of the ninth on a two-run double by Griffin Everitt and a wild pitch by Will Semb that scored another run. The Gophers would go down 1-2-3 in the ninth to end the game and fall, 12-5.
