All-Time Team Captains
MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota men's hockey head coach Bob Motzko announced Brock Faber, Jackson LaCombe and Jaxon Nelson have been named team captains for the 2022-23 season.
Â
Mainstays in the lineup, the three were valuable contributors combining for 54 points on last year's Golden Gophers squad that reached the NCAA Frozen Four for the 22nd time in program history. As the team enters its 102nd official season of competition, 178 players now have earned the distinction of serving as a team captain dating back to 1921-22.
Â
"These three are following in a long line of incredible Gopher leadership and I know they'll continue to carry that tradition this season," Motzko said. "They have given their heart and soul to this program so it's only fitting that they have this opportunity to lead."
Â
Faber gained invaluable international experience on the 2022 U.S. Olympic team in Beijing and during a gold medal run for the U.S. National Junior Team at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship. Hailing from Maple Grove, Minn., he was named the Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore last season, the third Gopher to ever earn the accolade, after being a finalist for the award during his freshman year. A two-time All-Big Ten selection, Faber set new career highs in 2021-22 recording 14 points, two goals and 12 assists, and also landed on the Academic All-Big Ten Team.
Â
LaCombe, a three-year letter winner for the Maroon & Gold, has played more than 100 games in his tenure totaling 64 points from the blue line. He has missed only four games in his career, all of which came while helping the U.S. National Junior Team win a gold medal at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship. A native of Eden Prairie, Minn., he was a 2020-21 Second Team All-America selection in his sophomore season and has earned a spot on an All-Big Ten Team each of the previous two years following B1G All-Freshman Team honors as a rookie. He set a career high recording 30 points, including a team-best 27 assists, a year ago.
Â
Nelson is back for his fourth season at Minnesota having skated in 90 career games registering 31 points with six power play goals. The Magnolia, Minn., product had a two-goal game against Penn State last November on his way to a career-high six goals for the year. He added his first two-assist performance as a Gopher in last season's NCAA opener against UMass picking up the secondary assist on the game winner in overtime. Nelson tallied the game-winning goal in the 2021 Big Ten tournament title game against Wisconsin and the team is 21-6 overall when he scores at least one point during his three seasons. He also has been named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team in the previous two campaigns.
