Brown’s First Career Hattrick Propels Gophers’ First Win of the Year

9/1/2022 3:44:00 PM | Soccer

Minnesota was led by senior forward Izzy Brown, who scored three goals

MINNEAPOLIS – Returning to its home pitch, the University of Minnesota soccer team (1-3-1, 0-0-0) rebounded with a 4-0 victory over the Drake Bulldogs (1-4, 0-0-0 MVC) on Thursday afternoon at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

Izzy Brown dominated the offensive drive, securing her first career hattrick with goals at the 35, 49, and 50-minute marks. Brown's first goal was assisted by Delaney Stekr while her second goal was assisted by Elizabeth Overberg, her third and final goal of the match went unassisted.

Christa VanLoon also saw the back of the net for the first time this season, with an assist from Abi Frandsen.

Drake attempted only six shots, with Minnesota senior goalkeeper Megan Plaschko making one save in her first clean sheet of the season.

"I think it's great for our group's confidence," said head coach Erin Chastain. "They've been working really hard and have bought in. We felt like we weren't creating many offensive chances, and not as connected as we wanted to be, so that's what we focused on this week. We saw that today in our dangerous chances. I'm certainly proud of the group and I feel really good that they can celebrate. Once again, this is a great group, we believe in them, and we will build off this win."

The scoring drive began 35 minutes in as Brown put the Golden Gophers on the board. Stekr played a ball from Minnesota's 18-yard box down the middle of the field. Brown, wide open, dribbled past Drake's goalkeeper to finish.

Four minutes later, Frandsen played a ball to senior forward Christa VanLoon's left foot. VanLoon rocketed the Maroon and Gold's second goal of the day to the upper left corner of the net. Giving the Gophers a 2-0 advantage heading into the second half.

Two back-to-back goals from Brown would be the insurance to seal the win for the Gophers.

At the 49-minute mark, Overberg won the possession after a scramble in the box. She had a tight pass to Brown, who finished.

A minute later, Minnesota was awarded a corner kick. Khyah Harper mailed a ball into the box, where it was shot out to the top of the 18-yard line and delivered to Brown. Once again wide open, the senior forward finished.

"I'm super excited that I was able to score my first hattrick and very thankful for my team me who set me up well," said Brown. "I'm so happy our team put in a full 90 minutes and came out with a 4-0 win."

Minnesota hits the road as they take on North Dakota on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. The match will be live from Grand Forks, N.D., and streamed on MIDCO sports.
