Minnesota Picks Up Weekend Sweep with Victory Over Fighting Hawks

9/4/2022 4:02:00 PM | Soccer

GRAND FORKS – Powered by three goals, the University of Minnesota soccer team (2-3-1, 0-0-0 Big Ten) dominated the University of North Dakota (2-3-1, 0-0-0 Summit League) in a 3-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Bronson Field.

Sunday's contest marks the Gophers' second-straight win of the 2022 season and third-straight win over North Dakota. Minnesota now leads the series, 3-0.

Junior Sophia Romine led the offense and picked up six points – scoring two goals and assisting graduate defender Alana Dressely in the 14th minute.

The offensive push didn't stop there, five other Gophers took a chance for a combined 18 opportunities. The Maroon and Gold led in S.O.G., 9-3.

Despite giving up one goal late in the second half, Minnesota's backline stayed stout allowing North Dakota only four chances.

"I'm really proud of our effort, this is a tough place to play," said head coach Erin Chastain. "They sat in, and we had to be creative and break them down. I thought we were much better in the second half, creating quality chances, scoring two good goals and had some other close looks. We're happy with the weekend and excited to get ready for a good Omaha team on Thursday."

It was Dressely that propelled Minnesota's lead. After dribbling down the right-side line, Romine passed the ball up North Dakota's 18-yard box to Dressely, who finished putting Minnesota ahead, 1-0.

Minnesota looked to extend their lead as they completed the first 45 minutes with a 9-2 shot margin.

In the second half, a pair of goals from Romine gave Minnesota the edge it needed to come out with the win.

In the 58th minute, junior midfielder Sophia Boman set up Romine 20 yards out, where she launched her first goal to the upper right corner.

Ten minutes later the Maroon and Gold were awarded a corner kick, that bounced in the box. Graduate Megan Gray serviced the ball to Romine's left foot. She placed the ball in the bottom left corner.

The Fighting Hawks were held scoreless through the 83rd minute, as North Dakota's Sarah McCracken finished from a free kick.

The Golden Gophers will return to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie for two back-to-back home matches against Nebraska Omaha on Thursday at 6 p.m. and Marquette on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on B1G+.
