Gophers Fall to No. 22 Pepperdine in Four

Mckenna Wucherer had 13 kills in her debut

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 6 University of Minnesota volleyball team fell to No. 22 Pepperdine in four sets, 28-26, 20-25, 18-25, 22-25 tonight at Maturi Pavilion. 

Taylor Landfair tallied 16 kills and 10 digs while Melani Shaffmaster went for 39 assists, 10 digs and four blocks.

True freshman Mckenna Wucherer tallied 13 kills in her collegiate debut. She had missed the first six games due to injury. 

As a team, Minnesota hit .204, had eight team blocks, 55 digs and four aces. Pepperdine (8-2, 0-0 WCC) hit .279, had 61 digs, eight aces and 10 team blocks.

Emily Hellmuth led Pepperdine with 21 kills.

Set Breakdown:
Set 1: The two teams split the first 10 points before a 5-1 Minnesota run put the Gophers up 11-6 and forced a Pepperdine timeout. A block from Ellie Husemann and Melani Shaffmaster, an ace from CC McGraw and two kills from Mckenna Wucherer spurred the run. The Waves got right back in the set with an 8-4 run to cut Minnesota's lead to just one at 15-14. Two attacking error's by PU and two more kills from Wucherer put the Gophers back up 20-16 and forced another timeout from the visitors. The Waves would score five of the next seven points to cut Minnesota's lead to one at 22-21, causing coach McCutcheon to call his first timeout of the set. The Waves would tie it up at 22-22 before Minnesota scored two straight to go up 24-22. With their backs against the wall, PU scored three straight to go up 25-24, forcing timeout No. 2 from Hugh. Facing set point, Wenaas tallied a kill to tie it at 25. After going down 26-25, three straight points for Minnesota helped seal the set, 28-26. Minnesota hit .286 in set one compared to .186 for Pepperdine. Wucherer and Husemann led the 'U' with four kills each while McGraw and Kilkelly each tallied four digs.


Set 2: The Gophers started out hot in set three, going up 3-0 after a kill from Wucherer and a block from Husemann and Wenaas. Minnesota would go up 5-2 before a 5-1 Pepperdine run put the visitors up for the first time in the set, 7-6. Minnesota took back the lead with a 4-2 run but the Waves responded back with a 5-1 run to go up 14-11. PU led 15-12 heading into the media timeout. Kills from Landfair and Wenaas cut the lead to one at 15-14 but would get no closer in a 7-3 PU run as the visitors took a 21-17 lead, causing coach McCutcheon to call a timeout. A kill and an ace from Shaffmaster cut the lead in half at 21-19, forcing a Pepperdine timeout. Two straight kills from the Waves put them right back up four at 23-19 and Hugh called timeout No. 2. PU would close it out with a 25-20 set two win to tie the match up at one. Pepperdine hit .258 in the second set compared to .121 for the Gophers. Landfair led the 'U' with four kills in set No. 2.

Set 3: Pepperdine started out strong, scoring five straight points to force a Minnesota timeout. Trailing 6-0, Minnesota finally scored its first point before three straight from the Waves put them up 9-1. Coach McCutcheon took timeout No. 2 with his team trailing 11-2. PU would go up by as many as 11 at 15-4 before a 5-1 Gophers run cut the lead to seven at 16-9. An ace from Elise McGhie and a kill from Landfair got the run going. The Gophers would get as close as six at 17-11 and 24-18 before falling in set three, 25-18. PU outhit Minnesota .375 to .139 in set two. Landfair led Minnesota with five kills while McGraw had a team-best seven digs in the set.

Set 4: The Waves came out of the gates strong in set four, tallying five of the first six points, leading to a Minnesota timeout. The Gophers would rally back, scoring five of the next eight to trail, 9-6. Landfair and Wucherer had kills in the spurt while Arica Davis and Shaffmaster tallied a block. PU answered back with an 8-1 run to go up 14-7 and take a commanding lead in the fourth set, leading to a Minnesota timeout. The Waves went up by as many as eight at 16-8 before a 6-2 Gophers run made it an 18-14 score, leading to a timeout. Carter Booth, Landfair and Wucherer had kills in the run and McGraw capped it off with an ace. The Gophers kept it going after the timeout, scoring four of the next five to cut the lead to one at 19-18. Three straight kills from Wucherer put the home team right back into the match. The Waves would respond with a 4-1 run, however, taking a 23-19 lead. The Gophers would cut it to 24-22 before the Waves finished it off, 25-22.

Notable:
-
Under Hugh McCutcheon, Minnesota dropped to 104-24 (.823) in non-conference competition.
-Pepperdine is the sixth ranked opponent the Gophers have played in seven games (3-3 record).
-The Gophers were 22-0 in the Diet Coke Classic under Hugh before tonight's match.
-Melani Shaffmaster now ranks 11th all-time at Minnesota in assists (2,152), passing Jennie Collings (1983-86, 2,115).
-Taylor Landfair totaled double digit kills for the seventh time this season and 25th time in her career. She also tallied her second straight double double (16 kills, 10 digs).
-CC McGraw led the Gophers in digs (19) for the sixth time this season. 19 digs is also a season-high.
-No. 1 overall 2022 recruit Mckenna Wucherer tallied 13 kills in her collegiate debut.
