: Minnesota (5-3, 0-0 Big Ten) starts Big Ten play against No. 10 Purdue (9-1, 0-0 Big Ten) Friday at 8 p.m. CT on BTN.

Set Breakdown:
Set 1: The two teams split the first 10 points before a 5-0 Gophers run forced the Cougars into taking a timeout. Carter Booth had two kills in the run while Mckenna Wucherer had one and Taylor Landfair had an ace. After a point from WSU, another 5-0 Minnesota run gave the home team a 15-6 lead. A block from Melani Shaffmaster and Ellie Husemann, an ace from CC McGraw and a kill from Jenna Wenaas sparked the spurt. WSU would cut the deficit to as few as seven a couple different times but would get no closer as the Gophers took the first set, 25-16. Minnesota hit .300 compared to just .094 for the Cougars. Both led the 'U' with four kills while Landfair had three. McGraw led the team with three digs.

Set 2: The two teams split the first eight points before a 4-0 Gophers run gave Minnesota an 8-4 lead. Landfair and Wenaas had kills in the run. The Gophers would extend their lead to as many as six at 13-7 after Wucherer added a kill and Shaffmaster and Husemann combined for another block. WSU called its first timeout of the set after the stuff. After a point from the Cougars, Minnesota scored five more in-a-row, getting two aces from Shaffmaster and a kill from Wenaas. The home team took an 18-8 lead, forcing WSU into its second timeout. The Cougars would get no closer than that the rest of the way as Minnesota coasted to a 25-13 set two victory to take a commanding 2-0 lead. Minnesota hit a season-best .565 in set two, getting multiple kills from Landfair (4), Booth (3), Wucherer (3), Husemann (2) and Wenaas (2).

Set 3: The Cougars came out firing in set three, scoring seven of the first 11 points to grab an early lead. A dump from Shaffmaster followed by an ace from McGraw and a kill from Wucherer tied it up at seven. WSU took a two-point lead at 10-8 before the Gophers came back to take an 11-10 lead after two kills from Landfair. It remained back-and-forth throughout the middle of the set and WSU took a 15-14 lead into the media timeout. The Cougars continued their run after the break with a 4-1 spurt that gave the visitors an 18-15 lead, forcing a timeout from coach McCutcheon. WSU went up by as many as four at 22-18 and 23-19 before the Gophers cut the lead to one at 23-22, forcing a WSU timeout. The Cougars went up 24-22 and coach McCutcheon called timeout No. 2. Kills from Booth and Wucherer tied the set up at 24, but the Cougars were able to cash in with two straight points to win set three, 26-24. WSU hit .324 in the set, compared to .263 for the 'U'.

Set 4: Minnesota trailed 1-0 but would never trail again in the fourth and final set. Wucherer tallied her 11th and 12th kills of the match to get the Gophers started before Wenaas added a pair and Landfair added one. WSU stayed between two and three points away for much of the early part of the set before a 5-1 Gophers run put the home team up 12-7 and forced a Cougars timeout. Minnesota kept its run going after the timeout, scoring five of the next seven to go up 17-9 and take control. WSU would score six of the next nine, however, to close within five at 20-15. After an attacking error put the 'U' up 21-15, WSU scored three straight to cut the lead to just three at 21-18, forcing a timeout from coach McCutcheon. Minnesota would close out the set with four of the next six points to win, 25-20.
