Minnesota Falls in Big Ten Opener

LINCOLN – After a scoreless 88 minutes in the Big Ten season opener, the University of Minnesota soccer team (4-4-2, 0-1-0 Big Ten) fell to Nebraska (3-3-3, 1-0-0 Big Ten) 1-0 at Hibner Stadium on Friday night.
Despite being out shot by the Cornhuskers 13-7 throughout the full 90, the Golden Gophers matched Nebraska's chances 5-5 in the final 45 minutes of play.
Sophomore forward Khyah Harper led the offense with three shots, followed by junior midfielder Sophia Boman who notched two. Senior goalkeeper Megan Plaschko recorded three saves.
"Soccer is a 90-minute game," head coach Erin Chastain said. "When you don't play for the full 90 minutes, good players and teams capitalize on mistakes. We weren't checked in on the last play. They had a good service, and their player had a free header. It's a tough lesson for our group to learn, so we're going to try some new tactics."
The possession stayed even between Minnesota and Nebraska during the first half. Minnesota dished out two opportunities, but the offense wouldn't spark until the second slate.
Following a reserved first half, the action picked up well into the second. Minnesota matched Nebraska offensively but were unable to finish.
The deciding play came late, as Nebraska delivered a ball into the Gophers' final third. Sarah Weber's head got on the end of the delivery, finishing the game winning goal for the Cornhuskers.
Minnesota returns home on Thursday in its Big Ten home opener against Indiana. Game time is set for 6 p.m. CT and will be streamed live on B1G+.
