SERIES HISTORY: INDIANA
Minnesota opens the home portion of its Big Ten slate with a visit from Indiana. The Golden Gophers have faced Indiana almost every season since 1993, except for the 2020-21 and 2021 seasons. During the series, Minnesota has amassed an 18-11-2 record over the Hoosiers.
SCOUTING INDIANA
The Hoosiers travel to the Gopher State hailing an undefeated 2-0-6 record. Indiana has yet to allow a goal this season, as it's outscored its opponents 8-0. Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Gerstenberg has collected Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week honors twice this season (Aug. 23 & Sept. 20).
The Hoosiers picked up wins over Indiana State and Trine, with notable ties at the time of play against (RV) Memphis and No. 8 Penn State.
SERIES HISTORY: NORTHWESTERN
In a quick turnaround, the Golden Gophers will return home to face No. 9 Northwestern on Sunday in their second Big Ten home conference match up. Minnesota has competed against the Wildcats every year except for its inaugural season in 1993 and the 2015 season.
The Gophers have rounded up a winning 18-8-2 series record over Northwestern, with the Wildcats' last win over Minnesota happening back in 2017. Since then, they've lost four straight times to Minnesota.
SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN
The Wildcats represent the second ranked opponent for Minnesota this season, coming to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium ranked No. 9 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. Northwestern looks to continue its seven-game undefeated streak with a win over Minnesota on Sunday.
The Wildcats quickly ran up in the rankings with a pair of top 25 wins over No. 19 Xavier and No. 6 Stanford earlier this month.
With 17 goals this season, Northwestern is led by Josie Aulicino on the offensive. Aulicino has played and started all nine games, collecting five goals and assists.
Defensively sound, Northwestern's backline have picked up three Big Ten awards including Defender of the Week twice in Emma Phillips (Sept. 6) and Rowan Lapi (Sept. 13) while graduate Mia Raben earned Goalkeeper of the Week honors on Sept. 13 following their win over Stanford.
LAST SERIES RECAP
Minnesota looks to bounce back from a tough 1-0 loss Friday in its Big Ten opener at Nebraska. The Cornhuskers scores a late goal in the 88th minute from the head of Sarah Weber. Minnesota's offense matched Nebraska in the second half with five shots, but stayed limited as only two saw the frame.
LEADERS ON THE OFFENSIVE
Senior Izzy Brown and juniors Sophia Boman and Sophia Romine have shown their offensive flare this season.
Brown is tied for first in points and goals per game in the Big Ten thanks to her hat-trick against Drake during the nonconference season. She is only one of three Big Ten soccer players to sport a hat-trick this season.
As a force in the midfield, Boman and Romine have each collected a brace and assist in a game this season. Romine was first to do so against North Dakota, while Boman accomplished the same feat against Marquette.
BEND IT LIKE BOMAN
For the first time in her career wearing the Maroon and Gold, junior midfielder Sophia Boman received Co-Offensive Player of the Week nods on Sept. 13. She won alongside Michigan State's Camryn Evans.
Boman, who leads Minnesota offensively, notched three goals and an assist while securing seven of her eight points. She's the first Gopher to receive the weekly honor since Sydney Squires in 2017.
TACTFUL TRANSFERS
Minnesota's pair of transfers, Sophia Romine and Gabbie Cesarone, have made themselves key players in the backline and midfield. Starting and appearing in all nine matches this season, both have made their way to the leaderboard for the Gophers.
Romine, a junior midfielder, has played 619 minutes, finishing two goals while assisting with two others. She is third overall in points (six) and has recorded nine shots.
Cesarone, a graduate defender, found the back of the net twice against Omaha and Drake. Both of her goals were headers that came off corner kicks, bumping her to four points overall.
UP NEXT
Minnesota will return to the pitch next weekend for a split series against Michigan and (RV) Wisconsin. The Golden Gophers' match against the Wolverines will be live on Big Ten Network while the Border Battle against the Badgers will be streamed on B1G+.
BIG TEN PLAYERS TO WATCH
The Gophers had three student-athletes named to the Big Ten Players to Watch List, announced by the conference office Monday. Sophia Boman, Megan Plaschko and Izzy Brown were recognized. This is Boman's second time being named to the list, but a first for Plaschko and Brown.
SISTER-SISTER
In NCAA Division I women's soccer, there are 26 schools that feature at least one set on sisters. Of those 26, eight schools' roster two sets of sisters – Minnesota one of them. Minnesota natives Sadie Harper and Khyah Harper sit alongside Izzy Brown and Amelia Brown, who reign from Cary, N.C.TCU, who put up two goals within the last five minutes.
