Gophers Break Hoosier Barrier in 3-0 Victory

MINNEAPOLIS – Three second half goals gave the University of Minnesota soccer team (5-4-1, 1-1-0 Big Ten) the edge it needed to hand Indiana (2-1-6, 0-1-1 Big Ten) its first loss of the season at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Thursday night.
The Golden Gophers were led by junior forward Christa Van Loon who tabbed a goal, two shots, and an assist on the night. Graduate defender Gabbie Cesarone followed behind, scoring her third goal of the season while dishing out two shots. Senior forward Izzy Brown scored her fourth goal of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Megan Plaschko picked up her fourth clean sheet of the season, saving two shots – a season-low by the Hoosiers.
"It's our Big Ten home opener, we were excited for the match," head coach Erin Chastain said. "Happy with the way the team started the second half, we felt like we had a lot of momentum and wanted to build on that. The team stepped up, it was a complete effort from a lot of players. That's going to be important going forward. I'm really proud of our group, it's been a tough start for us and I thought we generated some nice chances. Certainly, three goals and a shutout is a great Big Ten win."
After a scoreless first half, the Maroon and Gold sparked the offensive drive quickly into the second.
In the 67th minute off a delivery from Van Loon, Cesarone used her head to place the ball in the back of Indiana's net. The defender's goal marks the first goal allowed by the Hoosiers and her third of the season – all of which have been headers.
Seven minutes later, it would be Brown who added to the board in favor of Minnesota. After receiving a ball from junior midfielder Sophia Boman, Brown's footwork got past Indiana's backline to finish off her right foot.
Finishing the winning insurance 20 yards out, Van Loon's left foot secured the 3-0 win for the Gophers in the 76th minute. Her goal marks her second of the season.
Minnesota is set to face No. 9 Northwestern on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. Sunday's match is Rock the Robbie and will be highlighted by a maroon out. More information can be found here.
