Gophers Fall to No. 9 Northwestern
9/25/2022 3:49:00 PM | Soccer
MINNEAPOLIS – A goal in the 70th minute lifted the No. 9 Northwestern Wildcats, 2-1, over the Golden Gophers on Sunday afternoon at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
Minnesota led Northwestern in shots by a slim 9-8 margin, as each team netted four shots in the second half. The Wildcats outshot the Gophers on goal, 7-5.
After facing seven shots, senior goalkeeper Megan Plaschko had season high five saves against Northwestern. Seniors Sadie Harper, Izzy Brown and junior Sophia Romine tabbed two chances on the day, as Harper scored the lone goal.
Harper's goal was assisted by senior McKenna Buisman in the 68th minute.
"Credit to Northwestern, they're a top ten team," head coach Erin Chastain said. "I felt in moments we did well and worked hard to tie the game up. I'm disappointed in the way we gave up the game winning goal. In those big moments you must be super disciplined, and we lost some of that. I loved the tying goal and moments where we were dangerous and made their keeper make some saves. We're going to learn and grow from it, we have a really good Michigan team coming in on Thursday. In the Big Ten, you must turn the page quickly and move onto the next."
After a quiet 23 minutes, Northwestern put itself on the board first. Minnesota native Lily Gilbertson found the back of the net off a cross from Ella Hase.
The Gophers responded, peppering Northwestern's keeper with five shots in the first half, but were unable to finish.
After heading into the locker room down 1-0, it was Buisman's delivery that set up Harper to even the score. Harper's goal marks her first on the season and fourth of her career.
Northwestern's game winning goal came with twenty minutes remaining in the match. Off a corner from Josie Aulicino, Rowan Lapi used her head to seal the Wildcat's nine-game unbeaten streak.
Before heading to Madison, Wisc., to face the Badgers, the Golden Gophers will be live from Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Big Ten Network on Thursday as they take on the Michigan Wolverines at 7 p.m. CT.
