Minnesota Drops to Wolverines, 1-0
9/29/2022 9:35:00 PM | Soccer
MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota soccer team fell 1-0 to the Michigan Wolverines on Thursday night at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
Michigan (6-4-2, 1-2-1 Big Ten) picks up its first Big Ten victory of the season and first win on Minnesota's (5-6-1, 1-3-0 Big Ten) home turf since 2012.
Goalkeeper Megan Plaschko faced seven shots, saving six. Despite the late goal, Plaschko was solid between the pipes, keeping the game close. Senior forward Izzy Brown led in shots, with two on frame.
The Wolverines' game winning goal came from Minnesota native Meredith Haakenson in the 65th minute off a cross from Sarah Birdenstine.
"Michigan's a really good team – they were in the Elite Eight last year," head coach Erin Chastain said. "They were wanting to get their first conference win; we had some nice moments and were able to be dangerous. But, when you play a good team, you may only get a few chances and we didn't capitalize on them."
The Golden Gophers will return to the pitch on Sunday in Madison, Wisc., to face the No. 23 ranked Badgers. The game will be streamed live on B1G+ at 1 p.m. CT.
