Minnesota Falls to No. 23 Wisconsin

MADISON – After two late goals in the 82nd and 87th minutes, the University of Minnesota soccer team fell to No. 23 Wisconsin, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at McClimon Stadium.
Despite the loss, the Golden Gophers (5-7-1, 1-4-0 Big Ten) outshot the Badgers (10-1-2, 5-0-0 Big Ten) 12-3, as eight saw the frame.
"We're really disappointed with how we closed out the game," head coach Erin Chastain said. "They had two chances to score, and they scored. We generated plenty of offense and scored a great goal. There's a lot of Big Ten play left and we're going to spend the week getting ready for Iowa."
Scoring opportunities came frequent for Minnesota during the first 45 minutes of play. Four Gophers saw chances, with shots from Abi Frandsen, Sophia Boman, Sophia Romine, and Khyah Harper.
Minnesota's backline held the Badgers to a shotless first half, a season low for Wisconsin.
At the 50-minute mark, freshman midfielder Amelia Brown scored her first career goal off a corner kick from graduate forward McKenna Buisman. The left footed, in-swinger set piece sailed to Brown who used her head to finish.
After leading for 32 minutes, the Big Ten's leading scorer in Emma Jaskaniec tied the match, 1-1. Thanks to an assist from Ashley Martinez, Jaskaniec broke free to score.
Wisconsin's game winning goal came five minutes later to seal the 2-1 decision. In a similar fashion, Aryssa Mahrt got past Minnesota's backline after being assisted by Rylee Howard.
Up next, the Gophers will return to their home pitch on Sunday Oct. 9, to face Iowa at 1 p.m. CT. The game will be live on Big Ten Network at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
