Minnesota Skates Past St. Thomas 5-0

1/13/2023 9:37:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Grace Zumwinkle moves into a tie with Natalie Darwitz for fifth-most goals in program history (102).

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 3/4 Golden Gopher women's hockey team continues its perfection on home ice with a 5-0 win over St. Thomas at Ridder Arena on Friday evening.

It took only 1:34 into the game for Minnesota (17-3-2) to light the lamp as fifth-year forward Grace Zumwinkle snuck one in on a wraparound to extend her scoring streak. Zumwinkle added her second of the period and NCAA-leading 18th goal of the season to extend the lead. Sophomore forward Abbey Murphy found the back of the net to complete a cap-off a three-point first period. Underclassmen Peyton Hemp and Josefin Bouveng each added a goal in the final two periods to propel the Gophers to their seventh-straight win over St. Thomas (7-15-1).

Sophomore Skylar Vetter made 17 saves to earn her 14th victory and fifth shutout of the season. St. Thomas' Alexa Dobchuk stopped 41 shots in the defeat.

Quotable
"A good win tonight," said head coach Brad Frost. "Another shutout for Skylar [Vetter] who's been playing great. She made some really good saves, especially in the third when we got a bit loose with our coverage. Overall, we applied a lot of pressure and generated a lot of shots, but we need to do a better job of hitting the net tomorrow. All in all, three points in the bank and we're satisfied with that."

Notable
•    Minnesota's 11-consecutive wins at home to start this season are its most since 2016-17 (also 11)
•    With two goals tonight, Grace Zumwinkle moves into a tie with Natalie Darwitz for fifth place in program history in career goals (102).
•    Zumwinkle has scored at least one goal in five-straight games and has nine goals in that span.
