Gophers pick up 12th straight home win.
MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 3/4 Gopher Women's hockey took down the University of St. Thomas 4-1 at the Ridder Arena on Saturday afternoon to complete Minnesota's seventh WCHA sweep this season.
Despite the Gophers outshooting the Tommies 28-10 in the first period, Minnesota (18-3-2) and St. Thomas (7-16-1) went into the first break all tied up 1-1. Abigail Boreen scored her 14th goal of the season just 36 seconds into the game to give Minnesota an early 1-0 lead, but the Tommies found the equalizer just two minutes later off the stick of Maddy Clough. Taylor Heise earned the second assist on Boreen's goal, giving her 200 career points.
Minnesota dominated the second period, scoring back to back unanswered goals. Heise scored on a power play to give the Gophers a narrow one goal advantage until Ella Huber found the back of the net for her tenth goal of the season, opening up the lead to 3-1. Catie Skaja assisted Hubers' goal, which marked the 100th point of Skaja's career.
The Gophers and Tommies skated evenly for the first 15 minutes of the third period before Boreen netted her second goal of the game to bring the final score to 4-1 in favor of Minnesota.
Skylar Vetter started in goal for Minnesota making 11 saves in her 15th win of the season. Saskia Maurer started in goal for the Tommies, stopping 28 shots in the loss.
