Johnson a Nominee for Hockey Humanitarian Award
1/18/2023 1:00:00 PM | Men's Hockey
MINNEAPOLIS - Ryan Johnson of the Minnesota men's hockey team was selected as one of 15 nominees for the 2023 Hockey Humanitarian Award. The honor is presented annually to college hockey's finest citizen - a student-athlete who makes significant contributions not only to his or her team but also to the community-at-large through leadership in volunteerism.
Johnson is one of only three to make the list from NCAA Division I men's hockey. In his fourth year with the Golden Gophers and first serving as an alternate captain, the Irvine, Calif., native has played 127 games, which is tied for second among all active players for the Maroon and Gold.
The senior scored the first game-winning goal of his career Jan. 14 at Notre Dame in Minnesota's 3-0 shutout. It was his second goal of the season, and he now has 10 points during the campaign to go with a team-leading 40 blocked shots.
One of only a handful of seniors in a program laden with youth, he has taken on the responsibility of guiding 11 freshmen not only on the ice, but in the classroom and in their lives as well. His coaches laud over his quiet leadership and what he brings to the rink everyday as he does a great job of being a person to look up to for his teammates.
Johnson has been active in the community since stepping on campus and helps run outreach around the area. He has played an important role with the Firebase Movement, a network of local churches and houses of prayer that seek to preach the Gospel to every man, woman and child in the Twin Cities.
