MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gophers track and field team is headed to Ames, Iowa, for the Cyclone Open on Jan. 20. The Gophers will have the opportunity to compete against the likes of Iowa State, Drake, Bradley, Omaha and others at the meet.

About the 2023 Cyclone Open
The action in Ames will be the second straight week the Gophers are in action after the team competed at the Leonard Hilton Invitational in Houston, Texas, last week. The meet will be contested at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center, which is 300-meter track with eight, 42-inch lanes made with mondo surface. The meet will not be scored for team scores. The meet will begin on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the women's weight throw and the women's shot put with the meet concluding with the women's 4x400m relay at 4:50 p.m. Live results can be followed on PTTiming.com.

Last Time Out: Leonard Hilton Invitational
The University of Minnesota track and field program won 11 events at the Leonard Hilton Invitational in Houston, Texas, on Jan. 13. After picking up a USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week honor in December, and a Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week, Shelby Frank picked up right where she left off in the weight throw. Frank won the event with a mark of 22.08m (72-5 1/4), marking the second time she has gone beyond 22-meters in the event. Frank is the only athlete in the country that has gone beyond 22-meters in two different meets.

The Gophers saw two top-10 program performances go down in Houston with Alliyah McNeil being the first with a high jump mark of 1.75m (5-8 3/4). McNeil, who is a first year Gopher, shared the event victory with teammate Nyalaam Jok. Minnesota's second top 10 performance was Dyandra Gray in the 60m hurdles. Gray, who joined the Gophers after two seasons at Iowa Western CC, reached the final in a time of 8.68 and dropped that time to 8.58 in the final which is the No. 7 time in program history. The top 10 time from Gray now gives three current Minnesota student-athletes that are currently in the all-time top 10 in the 60m hurdles with Gray joining Maja Maunsbach and Zariyah Black. Gray was the event's runner-up in Houston with Maunsbach (8.64) finishing third.

Young, Frank Sweep Big Ten Weekly Honors for Gophers
University of Minnesota track and field swept the women's Athlete of the Week honors on Jan. 18, with Amira Young and Shelby Frank both being recognized by the conference office. For Frank it is the second time she has been honored this season for her performance in the weight throw.

Frank's Big Ten honor is the fifth of her career and third indoor weekly recognition for the junior. The Grand Forks, N.D., native won the weight throw at the Leonard Hilton Invitational on Jan. 13, in Houston, Texas, with a throw of 22.08m (72-10 1/2). She is the only student-athlete in the country with multiple performances of over 22-meters in the weight throw this season and ranked No. 5 overall in the event with her season-best throw at the Minnesota Icebreaker in December.

Young's recognition is the second of her remarkable career in the Twin Cities. Her only previous honor came in 2021. Thus far this season Young is undefeated in five races over her two meets she has competed in. She won both the 60m and 200m at the Leonard Hilton Invitational in Houston. Her 7.34 winning 60m time nearly matched her season-best time of 7.33 that is ranked No. 15 in the nation this season. That 60m time is also No. 1 in the Big Ten this season. Young's 200m winning time of 24.27 in Houston is also No. 4 in the conference this season as is No. 46 in the nation.

A Quick Gophers 2021-22 Rewind
The University of Minnesota women's program on the track won the team's ninth overall Big Ten indoor championship, and second straight. In fitting fashion the Gophers 4x400m relay won a back-to-back title to seal the team's victory in Geneva, Ohio. Outdoors the Gophers registered a total of nine individual All-America finishes and had two relays earn the distinction as well. The women's program had a total of five All-American individual finishes with both the 4x400m relay and 4x100m relays earning All-America honors. In total Minnesota returns 13 student-athletes that earned All-America honors last season.

Up Next:
The Gophers will return home for the Jack Johnson Classic from Jan. 27-28. That meet will host a heptathlon and pentathlon on Friday while the rest of the meet will be contested on Saturday.
