The University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team claimed victory over Penn State after scoring 196.225 at Maturi Pavilion on Saturday night.
Penn State finished the meet with a team score of 195.525.
Notable
Junior Mya Hooten finished with at least a 9.900 in each of her three events, capturing the event title with a score of 9.950 on floor.
"It really changes the environment. And when there's a lot of people out here, it was so much fun," Hooten said about the passionate crowd that filled the Pav on Saturday night. "The crowd was crazy. It just makes everything better when the crowd is excited."
Quotable
"We're making progress each and every week, so there's a lot to take away from this meet," head coach Jenny Hansen said. "We have a lot to be proud of but also realize that we're just not quite where we want to be yet. We've got to keep working and keep figuring out some of our lineups. Almost half of our lineups are new people, so we've got to get them experience and get them confident."
EVENT BREAKDOWN
VAULT
The Gophers started their Saturday night meet strong with Hooten and redshirt senior Maddie Quarles tying for the highest vault score with 9.900s. Continuing their strong performance in the event, junior Gianna Gerdes scored a 9.850, just behind Hooten and Quarles. Freshmen Seria Johnson and Sarah Moraw each scored 9.800, with senior Halle Remlinger rounding out the Gophers' lineup with a 9.725.
"I'm getting a lot more confident in myself and comfortable doing all four events, especially having my team there supporting me," Gerdes said. "Time really flies by, I don't really even notice that I'm competing all four but I love it so much and I'm so excited to keep doing it this season."
