MINNEAPOLIS (Jan. 21, 2023) – The University of Minnesota (9-11, 2-7 B1G) women's basketball team dropped a road contest to Purdue (13-6, 4-5 B1G) 75-56, in West Lafayette. Mara Braun scored 15 points while fellow freshman Amaya Battle scored 14 points and added four rebounds and three assists.
Along with Bruan and Battle the Gophers also got a double-digit performance from freshman forward Mallory Heyer who finished with 13 points and four rebounds. Alanna 'Rose' Micheaux posted a career high 15 rebounds while Maggie Czinano also posted a career high on the glass with 11.
Minnesota's first five points of the day came from Braun who was aggressive early but a Purdue 9-0 run in the middle of the first quarter would give the Boilermakers a nine-point lead with 2:16 to go. Minnesota cut into that lead late in the first but Purdue scored five of the last seven points to take a 22-15 lead into the second.
The second quarter saw Purdue shoot 50 percent from the floor while connecting on three of their seven first half threes. Purdue out scored the Gophers 22-10 in the frame, with Minnesota shooting 4-of-16 from the floor to trail 44-25 at the break.
The Maroon and Gold's best quarter was the third on Saturday afternoon. They out scored Purdue 18-12, connecting on a pair of threes and cutting the lead to single digits just 4:05 into the second half. The Boilermakers kept the Gophers at bay late in the quarter with back-to-back field goals in the final minute and took a 13-point lead into the fourth.
The Purdue Boilermakers had their best shooting quarter in the final quarter shooting 8-of-14 from the floor to return the team's 19-point halftime lead by the final buzzer.
As a team the Gophers shot 19-of-69 (27.5 percent) from the floor and 6-of-24 (25 percent) from beyond the arc. Minnesota out rebounded the hosts 45-41, including grabbing 17 offensive rebounds that led to 11 second chance points.
