No. 13/17 Michigan Defeats Minnesota at Williams Arena
1/29/2023 1:54:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MINNEAPOLIS (Jan. 29, 2023) – The University of Minnesota (9-12, 2-8 B1G) women's basketball dropped a 77-41 contest to No. 13/17 Michigan (17-5, 7-4 B1G) at Williams Arena.Â
Alanna 'Rose' Micheaux was the team's leader offensively with 15 points and added eight rebounds in the process. Freshman Amaya Battle also scored in double figures with 10 points while also adding five boards.Â
After an opening bucket from Micheaux the Wolverines responded with six straight to take control early at Williams Arena. The rest of the quarter Minnesota was within two just once with Michigan's lead growing to eight by the end of the 10 minute quarter with the last seven points coming from Leigha Brown who had 12 in the first half.Â
Entering the second down eight the Gophers once again scored the opening bucket in the form of Micheaux but six-straight points from Michigan brought the lead to 12 with 4:57 to go in the half. The rest of the way the Gophers and Wolverines went back and forth, but a small 5-0 run by Michigan helped the guests lead 34-23 at the halftime buzzer.Â
In the third Michigan erupted for 27 points while simultaneously holding the Gophers to just seven to extend their lead to 61-30. The last 10 minutes Minnesota's offense had its best quarter shooting the ball, making 5-of-11 from the floor but could not cut into the Michigan lead with the Wolverines out scoring the Gophers 16-11.Â
As a team the Gophers shot 18-of-59 (30.5 percent) from the floor and attempted just 10 threes, making two of them. The Wolverines won the rebound battle 45-37 with Minnesota grabbing 10 offensive rebounds.Â
The University of Minnesota will have a quick turnaround when No. 6/6 Indiana comes to Williams Arena on Feb. 1. That game is set for a 7 p.m. tip.Â
