STARTING FIVE
• The University of Minnesota men's basketball team plays its third game this week when it travels to Northwestern Saturday for an 11 a.m. game. It also marks the fifth game in 12 days for the Gophers, dating back to Jan. 16. The Gophers are 101-70 all time against the Wildcats, and 38-45 in Evanston, Ill. After winning two straight against Northwestern, the Gophers fell in the two team's last meeting March of last year, also at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
• Saturday's game marks the only contested game between the two teams this year. Minnesota played Northwestern twice last season, both home and away, which included a win at Williams Arena. Minnesota's other solo contests include Ohio State (W, 70-67), Indiana (L, 57-61), Iowa (Feb. 12) and at Michigan State (Feb. 15).
• Minnesota fell to Indiana Wednesday night, 61-57 at Williams Arena. Jamison Battle led Minnesota with 20 points, but Indiana scored the game's final seven points to escape with a win over a shorthanded Gophers squad. Minnesota was limited to seven players in the game, as the Gophers were without starting forward Dawson Garcia, center Pharrel Payne, and guard Braeden Carrington.
• Jamison Battle had his third 20-point game this season and his 75th career game reaching double-figures Wednesday night. He was 8-of-16 from the field, including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc, and he added five rebounds, two steals and an assist in 40 minutes. Battle has reached double-figures 38 times at Minnesota.
• A couple standout notes from Wednesday's game. Jaden Henley saw 32 minutes of play during the Indiana game, produced seven points, four rebounds, drew five fouls and added an assist and steal. It was the most time he played during his young Gopher career. Treyton Thompson played 37 minutes, had eight points and eight rebounds during the Indiana loss, all season bests for the sophomore. Minnesota also had just five turnovers in the Indiana game, which tied a season best. The other time this season was five turnovers vs. Illinois. The last time Minnesota had fewer than five turnovers in a game dates back to December of 2021.
ABOUT NORTHWESTERN
• Like Minnesota, Northwestern will play its third game in a week when Minnesota comes to town Saturday. The Wildcats enter the game with a 14-5 overall record and 5-3 within Big Ten play. Northwestern is riding a two-game win streak, winning both of its games this week against Wisconsin (66-63) at home and at Nebraska (78-63).
• Northwestern is led by senior and red-shirt senior Boo Buie and Chase Audige, who average 15.4 and 15.3 ppg. Ty Berry also averages double digits at 10.1 ppg, while Robbie Beran is at 9.1. Audige averages 2.7 steals per game with 51 this season.
• As a team, the Wildcats average 69.3 ppg, while allowing just 61.1, as their scoring margin ranks sixth in the league and third in scoring defense. Northwestern also averages 37.1 rebounds per game and his shooting 39.7 from the field, including 32.1 from past the arc.
THE LAST TIME
• Jamison Battle led all scorers with 20 points in last year's regular season finale match-up at Welsh-Ryan Arena on March 6, 2022.
• Northwestern did the majority of their damage in the first 10 minutes of the game, opening the game on a 29-9 run while shooting 10-17 from the field and 5-8 from deep.
INJURIES FOR THE GOPHERS
• Minnesota freshman guard Braeden Carrington has suffered a right leg stress reaction and will be sidelined for approximately four weeks, announced Jan. 19. His status will be re-evaluated after that time. Carrington, one of the first off the bench, averages 22 minutes and 6.2 points in 14 games this season.
• Minnesota was without Dawson Garcia and Pharrel Payne against Indiana on Wednesday. Garcia is sidelined with a bone bruise, while Payne is in concussion protocol. Garcia started in 18 games and led the team in scoring, while Payne averages 22.1 minutes played this season.
ON THE DOCKET
• Minnesota is on the road for the second time in as many games when it travels to Rutgers on Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on Big Ten Network.
• Mike Grimm and Spencer Tollackson will also be on the radio call on KFAN 100.3 FM.
