Golden Gophers Go 4-1 on Weekend to Wrap Up Dual Season

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota swimming and diving teams won four of their five dual meets as they closed out competition Saturday at Norris Aquatics Center in Evanston, Ill.
The Gopher men defeated host-Northwestern 221-130 and Purdue, 194-153, while the women topped Iowa 287.5-64.5 and the Boilermakers, 247-105, and lost to the Wildcats, 200-153. In all, Minnesota had seven event victories on Saturday, four for the men and three for the women.
The Golden Gophers' top performances came in the 200 back and 400 IM as the men and women swept both events.
Junior Paula Rodriguez Rivero posted a convincing victory of nearly 1.5 seconds in the 200 back as she touched first at 1:55.46, while for the men senior Desmon Sachtjen took first and dropped his NCAA 'B' cut by 1.14 seconds to 1:43.01.
In the 400 IM, junior Megan Van Berkom won by exactly eight seconds over the competition with her second fastest time of the season, 4:08.98. Fellow junior William Christenson then completed the 400 IM sweep for the Gophers at 3:50.98.
The Gophers also saw swimming victories for fifth-year senior Max McHugh and sophomore Bar Soloveychik. McHugh posted his fourth win of the season in the 200 breast, finishing in 1:54.96. The 500 free saw the Gophers go 1-2-3 as Soloveychik won in 4:19.43, junior Chris Nagy followed at 4:25.84 and Christenson took 3rd in 4:26.88.
The women also got an event win from fifth-year senior Joy Zhu on the 1-meter diving board. The win, her seventh of the season, came with a score of 322.35.
Minnesota closes out the regular season next weekend when it plays host to its First Chance Meet Friday and Saturday at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
