DULUTH, Minn. – The No. 3 Golden Gopher women's hockey team extended its win streak to 12 games with a 4-3 win over No. 6 Minnesota Duluth on Saturday afternoon at AMSOIL Arena.
It was Minnesota (22-3-2) who found the back of the net first again after sophomore forward Peyton Hemp scored 12:02 into game two on the power play. Freshman forward Josefin Bouveng doubled the lead with her ninth goal of the season early in the second period before Minnesota Duluth (19-8-1) responded with a power play goal just over eight minutes later. Hemp closed out the middle frame by scoring her second of the game on a two-on-one.
The Bulldogs responded early in the third period with a goal from Mannon McMahon, but it was fifth-year forward Abigail Boreen who answered again for Minnesota with her 18th goal of the season. UMD's Anderson pulled the home team within one with 2:30 remaining, but it wasn't enough to catch the Gophers.
Sophomore goaltender Skylar Vetter made 24 saves to win her 11th straight game and improve her record to 19-3-2. Minnesota Duluth's Emma Soderberg made 20 saves in the loss.
Quotable
"A really solid weekend for us," said head coach Brad Frost. "Tonight was a lot different from last night in that it was very special-teams heavy. We did a good job on both the penalty kill and the power play. It was a very physical game and both teams wanted it very badly. I'm very proud of our team to be able to take all six points from a sixth-ranked Duluth club."
Notable
• Minnesota improves to 20-0-1 when scoring first.
• Abigail Boreen has now scored 13 goals in her last 12 games.
• Peyton Hemp recorded her fourth-career multi-goal game and matched a career-high with three points.
