Gophers Set to Tangle With Huskers Saturday Morning

STARTING FIVE
•  The University of Minnesota men's basketball team returns to Williams Arena Saturday when the Golden Gophers host the Nebraska Cornhuskers at 11 a.m. The game also marks alumni day for the Golden Gophers. Minnesota Athletics will recognize attending alums during halftime of the game. Saturday also marks the first home contest since Dec. 22, as the Alcorn State game was canceled due to Alcorn travel delays. 
•  Saturday marks the first time the Cornhuskers have been to Williams Arena since Feb. 8, 2021. The Gophers won that game, 79-61, also their last win against the Huskers. In that win, Marcus Carr scored 11 of his 19 points in the last five minutes, while Brandon Johnson had a double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Since that win, Minnesota has dropped two-straight against Nebraska, both coming in Lincoln, Neb.  
•  Guard Ta'Lon Cooper is seven assists away from reaching his 500th career assist. The junior from Roebuck, S.C.,  established 407 during his Morehead State tenure, including 202 in 2021-22. With the Gophers, Cooper has established 86 assists this season and ranks nationally in assists per game (6.6). 
• Minnesota is coming off a 63-60 loss at No. 14 Wisconsin Tuesday night in Madison, Wis. Ta'Lon Cooper led Minnesota with 16 points, while Dawson Garcia had 14 points and nine rebounds. Jamison Battle also added 13 points and nine boards.
• Minnesota has three freshmen that average nearly 20 minutes played this season in Braeden Carrington (24.3), Pharrel Payne (21.2) and Jaden Henley (19.0). In fact, Minnesota has four freshmen who average over 18 minutes with Joshua Ola-Joseph at 18.1. No Big Ten team has more than two freshman playing 20+ minutes per game and Minnesota is the only team that has four freshmen average over 18.
Purdue (Smith/Loyer), Ohio State (Sensabaugh/Thornton) and Illinois (Clark/Epps) also have two freshmen over 20 minutes. In fact, within the Big Ten, only six schools have a single freshman that averages over 20 minutes played this season. 

ABOUT NEBRASKA
• Nebraska holds an 8-7 overall record and 1-3 mark in Big Ten play entering the Minnesota game. The Cornhuskers are coming off a 74-56 loss at Michigan State Tuesday. Prior to that, the Huskers defeated Iowa, 66-50 in Lincoln, Neb.   
• Derrick Walker leads the Huskers averaging 13.7 points and 8.2 rebounds. Sam Griesel follows averaging 10.6 ppg and a team-best 60 assists. Keisei Tominaga also averages double digits at 10 per game. In conference action, C.J. Wilcher averages 10.3 ppg.  
• As a team, Nebraska averages 67.3 points per contest, and allows 65.4 per game. Shooting 44.4 percent from the field, the Huskers are also shooting 29.3 percent at the arc. They average 38.1 rebounds, which ranks eighth in the league. 

SETTING IT UP
Ta'Lon Cooper has picked up where he left off last year in assists. The Roebuck, S.C., product ranks third in the Big Ten in assists and second in assists per games through 13 contests this season. Cooper's 86 assists and 6.6 apg ranks 13th and sixth nationally. He also ranks sixth in the league in assist/turnover ratio at 2.32. His 493 career assists ranks 24th among active leaders nationally, while his 4.56 apg ranks 34th. Cooper also ranks second in the Big Ten in minutes played, averaging 35 per game. Starting in all 13 games for the Gophers, Cooper  has played in 420 minutes, which also ranks 54th nationally.  

YOUNG TALENT
• Minnesota is without the services of Parker Fox and Isaiah Ihnen this year due to season-ending injuries. That being said, the average age of Gopher players available to play is at 20.38. This is in comparison that last year's Gopher team held a team average age of 22.31.
• Minnesota has four freshmen that also average  over 18 minutes of play so far this season. That leads the Big Ten  in the amount of freshmen playing time.

ON THE DOCKET
• Minnesota is back on the road when it travels to No. 24 Ohio State, Thursday, Jan. 12. Tip time is slated for 5:30 CT and broadcast on FS1.
