Two assists in first pro game

MINNEAPOLIS - Following one of the most decorated single seasons in Golden Gophers hockey history in 2022-23, Logan Cooley took the next step in his career, stepping on the ice for his National Hockey League debut Friday night with the Arizona Coyotes. He became the 124th former Minnesota men's hockey player to play in the NHL, the most of any NCAA program in college hockey history.

An AHCA/CCM Hockey All-American West First Team in his lone year with the Maroon and Gold, the No. 3 overall pick from the 2022 NHL Entry Draft skated for the first time in an NHL sweater as his Coyotes took on the New Jersey Devils inside Prudential Center. Cooley finished opening night with a pair of assists in 19:02 of ice time, recording the first point of his professional career in the second period.

Cooley was a Hobey Baker Hat Trick Finalist a season ago after leading Minnesota with 60 points on 22 goals and 38 assists and also was named USA Hockey's Jim Johannson College Player of the Year. A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., he registered at least one point in 32 of 39 games played and paced the Gophers with 12 points in six postseason games, including eight points in four NCAA Tournament outings.
