Gopher Set for Home Opener Against St. Cloud State

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 4 ranked Golden Gopher women's hockey team looks to stay undefeated with a one-game, mid-week matchup with the St. Cloud State Huskies. The Gophers will raise a banner for their 2022-23 WCHA Final Faceoff Championship at their home opener at Ridder Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 7:00 p.m. CT. 

Raising a Banner
The Gophers will add another banner to Ridder Arena's rafters on Tuesday night, as their 2022-23 WCHA Final Faceoff Championship will be raised roughly 15 minutes before the game's 7:00 p.m. puck drop. The Maroon and Gold secured their eighth WCHA Tournament Championship last season, finishing the season with a 30-6-3 record and reaching the Frozen Four before falling to Wisconsin.

Scouting the Huskies
St. Cloud State is off to a strong start in 2022-23, winning five of its first six games and registering two WCHA victories. CC Bowlby has led the scoring effort for the Huskies, scoring four goals in her first six games played. Bowlby leads St. Cloud State with six points through six games. Emma Gentry has found the back of the net three times this season while also adding one assist. Goaltender Sanni Ahola has recorded a shutout in each game she's played this season, holding Union, Mercyhurst and Bemidji State state scoreless in those three games.

Multiple Contributors
The Maroon and Gold had various players make an impact in its first two series of the season. Redshirt junior Abbey Murphy has led the scoring charge, scoring seven goals in four games to start the season. Junior Ella Huber has registered seven points in the first four games (3g, 4a). Freshmen Ava Lindsay and Emma Kreisz have each scored one goal this season, with the two linemates playing significant time in their first seasons as Gophers.

Stout Goaltending
Goaltenders Skylar Vetter and Lucy Morgan have allowed just one goal this season, with Vetter notching a shutout on Oct. 6 (17 saves) and Morgan shutting out St. Thomas on Oct. 14 (16 saves) for her first shutout as a Gopher.

Captains Leading the Way
Junior Peyton Hemp was named team captain this fall for the first time in her career, while Madeline WethingtonAbbey Murphy and Ella Huber were named assistant captains, also the first time they've worn a letter. All three of the Gopher leaders have made their presence felt thus far in 2022-23, with Murphy scoring seven goals, Huber registering seven points, Hemp scoring once and assisting once, and M. Wethington scoring one goal and assisting three goals.

Maroon and Gold Firsts
Freshman Ava Lindsay scored a goal in just her second collegiate game, finding the back of the net in Minnesota's Oct. 7 matchup with RIT. Fellow freshman Emma Kreisz -- and Audrey Wethington -- assisted Lindsay on the play. On Oct. 14 vs St. Thomas, Kreisz netted her first collegiate goal. In the same game, graduate transfer Lucy Morgan secured her first shutout as a Gopher, stopping 16 Tommie shots.

Scoring Milestones on the Horizon
After adding 11 points in the first four games, Abbey Murphy now sits at 71 career points (40g, 31a), and is on pace to quickly approach the century mark. Madeline Wethington also added to her pursuit of 100 career points by scoring one goal and three assists so far this year. She now sits at 81 career points (23g, 58a). Peyton Hemp sits at 62 career points (29g, 33a) after the Gophers' first four games in 2022-23.

Quest for Eighth National Title
Minnesota has won seven national championships (2000, 2004, 2005, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016) and looks for a historic eighth title national crown in 2023-24.
