MINNEAPOLIS -- The RV Minnesota Golden Gophers (8-8, 4-4 Big Ten) stay home this weekend for games against Rutgers (9-9, 1-7 Big Ten) and Michigan State (12-7, 4-4 Big Ten). The match against Rutgers is Friday at 7 p.m. while Sunday's matinee is at 2 p.m. Both matches will be streamed on B1G+.

• The 'U'defeated Northwestern (25-14, 16-25, 25-27, 25-22, 15-12) in five sets on Sunday to complete a 2-0 week of play. Four players had 10+ digs and three had 10+ kills, led by 15 from Taylor Landfair. Minnesota tied a season-high with 12 service aces in the victory.
GOPHERS UNRANKED IN AVCA POLL
• The Gophers entered the 2023 season with a No. 7 overall ranking in the Preseason AVCA poll. Despite being ranked 24th coming into last week and going 2-0, Minnesota dropped from the rankings on Oct. 16. The Gophers were ranked in the past 130 AVCA polls (2,965 days), dating back to Sept. 7, 2015.
SCOUTING RUTGERS
• The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are led by fourth-year head coach Caitlin Schweihofer. Rutgers is off to a strong start, with nine wins already in 2023. They won eight games overall in each of the last two seasons.
• RU holds non-conference wins over Virginia, Winthrop, Howard, Columbia and Marist amongst others. Their lone conference win of the season came against the Golden Gophers on Oct. 7. It was their first top-25 win in program history. RU is 0-4 in B1G play away from home and 7-5 on the season outside of Piscataway.
• Alyssa Nayar was named Big Ten Setter of the Week on Oct. 9. She ranks 9th in the Big Ten with 8.75 aps.
SCOUTING MICHIGAN STATE
• Michigan State is led by second-year head coach Leah Johnson, who spent her previous five years at Illinois State, leading the Redbirds to four NCAA Tournament appearances.
• The Spartans went 9-2 in non-conference play, but did not take down a high-major opponent. MSU earned its first and only Big Ten win at Maryland on Sept. 30 in a five set win.
• Libero Nalani Iosia ranks fourth in the B1G with 4.20 digs per set She's posted a league-best five 20+ dig matches in 2023. Taylah Holdem ranks eighth in the Big Ten during conference play with 3.82 kills per set.
MINNESOTA'S HISTORY VS. RUTGERS AND MICHIGAN STATE
• Minnesota is 10-3 all-time against Rutgers. The Gophers have won nine of the 11 matchups against RU in three sets. Rutgers took down Minnesota in four sets on Saturday, Oct. 7 in Piscataway for their only conference win of the season and their first victory over the Gophers since 1983.
• Minnesota is 58-18 all-time against Michigan State. They've won eight straight and nine of the last 10 in the series, including two three set wins last season.

• Gophers senior setter Melani Shaffmaster ranks second among all Big Ten setters with 0.95 kills per set in 2023. She's behind only NU's Alexa Rosseau (1.01 kps). After her is Indiana's Camryn Haworth (0.86 kps), Maryland's Sydney Dowler (0.77), Illinois' Brooke Mosher (0.68), Nebraska's Bergen Reilly (0.63) and PSU's Mac Podraza (0.59).
• A 6-foot-3 setter, Melani Shaffmaster ranked second in the Big Ten last year with 10.44 assists per set. She already ranks No. 8 in program history in assists (3,529).

AWOLEYE BUILDS A WALL
• A senior LMU transfer originally hailing from Marietta, Ga., Phoebe Awoleye started her Gophers career with a 'bang' on opening weekend. She posted 16 blocks (2.29 bps) and five kills on her way to Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge All-Tournament honors. Awoleye had a career-high 10 blocks in the win over No. 15 Baylor as the Gophers silenced the Bears attack, holding them to .000 hitting.Â
• She now ranks No. 27 nationally in blocks per set (1.33), including fourth in the Big Ten. Awoleye holds 10 different 5+ block matches this season, a team-best.
DAVIS DOMINATING AT THE NET
• In her last four games, Arica Davis has registered 23 blocks (1.36 bps). She tied her season-high with seven blocks apiece against Maryland and Rutgers. She's posted eight 3+ block matches in 2023.
'U' HOLDING FIRM AT HOME
• Since 2015, Minnesota holds a 109-17 (.870) record at home. This includes a 36-6 (.857) non-conference mark. The only non-conference losses home losses during that time were in 2018 to Oregon, 2021/2023 to Texas, 2022 to Pepperdine and Stanford and in 2023 to Creighton.
