Landfair, Wucherer Tally Double Doubles in Win at OSU

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Mckenna Wucherer and Taylor Landfair each put up double-doubles to help lead the Minnesota volleyball team to a 3-1 victory (25-21, 14-25, 25-22, 25-18) over the Ohio State Buckeyes Friday on the road at Covelli Center.
The conference victory improved Minnesota's record to 11-10 overall and 7-6 in Big Ten play with seven regular season matches to go. The Gophers have won seven straight matches on the road at Ohio State.
The Golden Gophers were led by the double-doubles from Landfair, who had 14 kills and 11 digs, and Wucherer, who had 16 kills and 10 digs. Lydia Grote added six kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Kylie Murr chipped in with 17 digs to go with seven blocks from Phoebe Awoleye. Melani Shaffmaster posted 31 assists, 10 digs and five blocks.
As a team, Minnesota hit .195 with 44 kills, 12 blocks, 60 digs and eight aces while Ohio State hit .133 with 48 kills, five blocks, 65 digs and 11 aces.
Emily Londot paced the Buckeyes (8-14, 5-8 Big Ten) with 18 kills and 11 digs.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Golden Gophers endured a back-and-forth first set to win 25-21 in a stanza that featured seven lead changes and was tied 13 times. Neither team led by more than four points in the match. got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked seven Ohio State attacks.
SET 2 | Minnesota lost set two 25-14 to tie the match 1-1. Minnesota trailed by as many as 11 points as Ohio State grabbed the advantage for good at 9-8 in a set that was tied up two times before the Buckeyes took over the lead.
SET 3 | Minnesota then got back on the winning track, emerging victorious in set three and taking a two sets to one lead in the match. The Golden Gophers took set three 25-22. Minnesota took the lead for good at 15-14 in a set that showcased three lead changes before the Golden Gophers took over in the second half of the set. The Minnesota offense also got a boost from four aces in the frame.
SET 4 | The 'U' kept the momentum going, closing out the match with a 25-18 fourth-set victory. The Golden Gophers took the lead for good at 13-12 in a set that had just one lead change before the Golden Gophers took over for good. Minnesota got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Ohio State attacks and capitalized on 12 OSU attacking errors on the way to victory.
Game Notes
» Mckenna Wucherer and Taylor Landfair each secured double-doubles in the win. It was Wucherer's fourth and Landfair's sixth double double of the year.
» Landfair passed 1,000 career kills with her fifth kill of the match tonight. She now has 1,009 in her career at Minnesota.
» Minnesota won its seventh straight game at Ohio State. They've won 11 of the last 13 in the series overall.
