Pair of Records Fall Friday at Minnesota Invite

MINNEAPOLIS - A pair of records fell Friday evening as the Minnesota Invite continued from Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
Swimming in the A final of the men's 100 fly, Davide Harabagiu set a new school record with a time of 45.94, surpassing teammate Kaiser Neverman's previous record of 46.02. Three events later, Gopher sophomore Summer Schmit broke the S9 Para American record in the 100 breast with a time of 1:14.48, taking down her own Para American record of 1:15.71 set in the prelims.
Minnesota swimmers found success in the finals of the 100 fly for both the men and women. In addition to Harabagiu's school record, Neverman secured an NCAA 'B' cut with a time of 46.56. Two other Gopher men, Tommy McCarthy (48.36) and Connor Groya (48.25), set personal records in the event. On the women's side, Claire Reinke hit the NCAA provisional cut with a personal best time of 53.11, joining Mina Kaljevic (53.89) in setting new PRs in the event.
The 'U' also had a strong showing in the 400 IM. William Christenson (3:48.31), Grace Drabot (4:15.85), Megan Van Berkom (4:04.36), and Katie McCarthy (4:14.46) all hit their respective NCAA 'B' cuts. McCarthy, along with Eliot Kennedy (4:18.86), Luke Leonidas (3:57.56), and Ryan Slonac (3:52.38) also collected personal records.
Bar Soloveychik added a NCAA provisional performance in the men's 200 free with a time of 1:35.43. Paula Rodriguez Rivero was the last swimmer for the maroon and gold to record a NCAA 'B' cut with a time of 53.18 in the 100 back.
For the day, the men's team claimed seven total NCAA 'B' cuts and saw 12 athletes set personal records. The women's team had personal bests by 13 athletes to go along with 10 NCAA 'B' cuts.
In the diving well, Minnesota grabbed the top two spots in the men's 1-meter with personal best performances from both YuTong Wang and Drew Bennett. Wang scored 381.55 to take first with Bennett following at 352.80. The women were led by Vivi Del Angel who took the top spot with a personal record score of 367.85, followed by Av Osero who placed second with a score of 309.20.
The 2023 Minnesota Invite wraps up on Saturday with the final short course yards races. Swimming prelims begin at 10 a.m., diving prelims start at 1 p.m., and finals for both are scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday's schedule features the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 400 free relay, and men's and women's platform diving.
