Golden Gophers Tally 16 NCAA ‘B’ Cuts on Final Day of Minnesota Invite

MINNEAPOLIS - The short course yards portion of the 2023 Minnesota Invite concluded Saturday with 16 NCAA 'B' cuts by Gopher swimmers.
Nine Minnesota women hit the provisional cut in their respective events on the day, while four men accomplished the feat. Hannah Cornish, Megan Van Berkom and Kaiser Neverman each secured a 'B' cut in both the preliminaries and finals. Additionally, 19 Gophers set new personal records.
The 'U' opened the finals with a strong showing in both the men's and women's 1650 freestyle. Newcomers Katie McCarthy and Jade Roghair each set new personal records in the event, while McCarthy (16:11.89) and junior Eliot Kennedy (16:27.36) collected 'B' cuts. For the men, seniors William Christenson (15:15.57) and Chris Nagy (15:12.53), along with junior Bar Soloveychik (15:00.56) all hit the provisional cut.
Kaiser Neverman was the final men's swimmer to hit the 'B' cut for the day. He swam the 200 fly in 1:45.83 in the prelims before swimming a 1:44.63 in the finals.
Minnesota got three additional pairs of 'B' cuts in the women's 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke and 200 butterfly.
In the 100 free, Hannah Cornish (48.73) and Morgan Thomas (49.16) each swam personal best times to hit the cut. Ava Gustafson (2:13.27) and Grace Drabot (2:13.72) also secured new personal record times in the 200 breaststroke for the cut. Claire Reinke swam her first career sub-two minute 200 butterfly with a 1:59.04 provisional time, while fellow flier Megan Van Berkom swam a 1:54.78.
Paula Rodriguez Rivero rounded out the Gopher women with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:56.90 in the 200 backstroke.
The Minnesota divers took to the platforms for the first time this season on Saturday afternoon. Drew Bennett rose to new heights with a personal best score of 407.60 to win the men's competition. The 'U' showed out on the women's side as well, with Vivi Del Angel (331.90) taking the crown followed by teammate Kate LaMonica (265.00) in second.
The annual Minnesota Invite officially concludes Sunday with long course meters (LCM) Olympic Time Trials.
