Training camp runs Dec. 14-16
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Hockey announced its preliminary roster for the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship Monday with four members of the Golden Gophers men's hockey team selected to the squad, including Ryan Chesley, Oliver Moore, Sam Rinzel, and Jimmy Snuggerud, while Associate Head Coach Steve Miller will serve as an assistant on the Team USA staff. The event will take place Dec. 26, 2023-Jan. 5, 2024, in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Team USA will host a training camp Dec. 14-16 in Plymouth, Mich., at USA Hockey Arena. All U.S. contests will be televised live on NHL Network when the event begins Dec. 26 at Frölundaborg.
Chesley is no stranger to representing his country, having played all seven WJC outings for the Americans in 2023 where he tallied one assist. He also spent two years with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program prior to starting his college career. This season at Minnesota, the sophomore leads the team with a plus-7 rating and is the only defenseman with multiple goals after scoring twice in a three-game stretch in late November.
Moore burst onto the college scene with a three-assist effort in his debut and is currently tied for Minnesota's assist lead, totaling nine after picking up one in three of the last four games. A native of Mounds View, Minn., he served as an alternate captain for Team USA at the 2023 U18 World Championship in Switzerland and had at least one point in every game on the way to a gold medal. Moore also spent two years playing for the USNTDP before he joined the Gophers this season.
Rinzel is the top point-producing defenseman in the Minnesota lineup this year, tying for the team lead with nine assists to go with one goal. In his first collegiate season, the Chanhassen, Minn., product has three multi-assist outings, one of which came in his Gophers debut. On the international stage, he played in the 2022 World Junior A Challenge for the U.S. and registered five points in six games, helping the team win a gold medal.
A two-year veteran of the USNTDP prior to joining the Gophers, Snuggerud ranked second in scoring for Team USA last year at the WJC with 13 points, including a pair of assists in the bronze-medal clinching victory. The Chaska, Minn., native has nine goals for the Maroon and Gold this season, and 30 goals in 56 career collegiate games, while recording a point in six of his last nine outings.
The Gophers have been represented by at least one player at the IIHF World Junior Championship in 45 of the 48 years it has been played. Last year, five players representing the Maroon and Gold helped the Americans win a bronze medal. Logan Cooley was joined by Snuggerud as two of the three players named Team USA's best of the tournament as the duo combined for 27 total points.
